just been offered an 04 r which has been dropped, mainly cosmetic although, the current owner is claiming that it jumps out of gear. Now he says that you can knock it into gear ride it then once you take the load off the engine ie. start to slow down it pops out of gear. Big job? any ideas what this could be?

Spoke to my local aprilia dealer, they are not sure obviously until they take a look at it.

Another question, if it is a deep internal problem does this mean an engine out job?

Any opinions or suggestions would be massively appriciated as it will probably help me decide whether or not to buy it

thanks for the help in advance

sounds like the drive dogs on the side of the gears are badly worn, or the gear selectors are shot or bent. My guess is engine out to strip the box down. Not cheap to repair if either of those as not long ago had to replace all the gears and selectors on my track bike cos a quick shifter buggered them all up! Over £800 in parts alone!

so possible gear selector then?, seeing as its been dropped on that side. There is a small nick on the frame where the gear lever has hit it. If it was to be a selector issue then does this also mean a full engine out job?

Is there any definitive tests I can do before stripping it down?

A nick in the frame is usually an insurance write off! Be carefull mate. If you have a workshop manual, and some experence in spannering, then it might be worth looking at it yourself. With out looking at my manual, i dont know how far the engine has to be split to get at the gears. Some are very easy, without having to remove any of the top of the engine. It wont do you any harm to give Griff a ring (fusebox on here) as he is THE Aprilia man:hail

yeah defo sounds like selector forks bent so not selecting gear fully or the dogs are worn allowing it to slip out. i would say engine out and gearbox stripped down.

dude ...my humble opinoin ....Walk away!

there are plenty of really good bikes out there that are almost still box fresh for the right money if your prepared to do the hunting!!

gearbox issues arent easy to fix as they are defo time consuming!

if you have the option ...walk away!!
