Rough gear changes, Help please. (Gear shaft Removal)

Hi everyone,
I purchased a second hand rsv 02 a couple of months ago. The gear changes are quite rough specially the first three gears. I've changed the clutch slave and bleed the system with a little bit of improvement but still doesnt feel right. I've checked the clutch itself and looks ok. I've also fitted a new chain and sprocket set because the old chain was stretched. I'm thinking that the gear shaft to the selector might be twisted or bent or something. Does anybody know if you need to remove the whole clutch assembly to take it out, I think they are quite close (or overlap) together.

Any help would be much appreciate it.
Thanks

Can you elaborate a little more on rough gear changes?

  • Is it that they fail to engage every time - false neutrals?

  • Do they clunk/graunch when selected?

  • Is the lever hard to operate?

  • Is it the same coming down the gears?

  • When you checked the clutch did you measure all the springs, plates, steels etc.... any steels or plates warped at all?

Pretty sure it's an engine out and casing off job to get at the gears.

My gear selection was dramatically improved when I fitted some AP rearsets. :D

Hi,
Thanks for the replay. Is more like a clunk specially when I go up the gears, up to third then they are a lot smother (also I'm reving less hard when I get up to speed).
There are not false neutrals and the lever is easy to operate.
I think is ok going down the gears as I do double clutch shifting is a lot smother.
I did remove the springs, plates and steels but I only check them visually, but they look good nothing oviously wrong. The bike has 12500 miles.
If I double clutch shift when going up the gears feels ok.
Also when I engaged first standing still I heard a nusty clunk but I think that is normal, or may be not.
So what do you think?

Sounds like you have clutch drag and that is more than likely due to inefficient clutch operation.

Had you noticed the level dropping in the reservoir?

Was the slave cylinder you fitted a known good one, why was the old one replaced?

I know you said you had bled yours through but I found that the best in fact no the only way to bleed the clutch circuit completely was to replace the banjo bolt at the master cylinder with one that has a built in bleed nipple. Or remove the salve and raise it up and tilt to aid bleeding....

Clunky selection is pretty normal when selecting first, it can be reduced by ensuring the chain tension is spot on and it has had the .40 jet fitted.

Just out of curiosity what gears are you running, reason I ask is that I found my gears a pain in the arse round town when I ran 16/42, moved across to 15/42 and it totally eradicated the issue as I was higher up the rev range.

Hi again,
I replaced the slave cylinder to try to improve the heaviness of the clutch and try to solve the gear problem. I bougth a brand new aprilia part to replace it.
The clutch feels lighter now but the problem is still there.
I did used a vacuum pump to bleed the clutch as I know they can be a pain.
I havent changed the oil jet, I guess it still have the 60 fitted. Do you think that can help?
I'm running the standard gear ratio which is a 17/42, it is quite uncomfortable to drive around town and I'm thinking in getting a 16 teeth sprocket.
Thanks

Just go straight for the 15/42 set up mate, well worth it.

Have you set up the gear lever to suit you, it could be just a case of you not having enough lift to fully engage the gear?

17/42 christ, I bet that was a nightmare in traffic, loadsa clutch slipping.... LOL

Did you remove and invert the slave when you bled it, if not then you'll defo have air trapped in it?

Hi,
I think I'll try to bleed the slave again, (the slave was installed when I did the bleeding.)
I did move the gear lever but maybe not enough.
I definetly will go for a smaller sprocket.
Thanks for the help.
