Removing the swinging arm for inspection

I decided to overhaul all the bearings in the rear suspension, Gen 2.

I have taken off the shocker, dog bone, rear exhaust, no problems.

I have taken the long bolt out of the swinging arm pivot, but the swing arm does not want to come out.

I see on the right side pivot, there is a large castle type nut that appears to be part of the pivot assy.

Can someone advise, does this nut need to come off to release the swinging arm from the frame.

Or if I use a big enough hammer and chisel will I be able to get it to bits. :yes

The castle nut needs to come out fella.
You can get the castleated socket off ebay for about a tenner.

Wow OT, I'm impressed. Will the bike be back together for the summer, or keep that Suzy company for a while?:thumbup :lol

Its getting sorted now.:yes

I did have a special box spanner to take the castle nut off on the right site. It was hiding & disguised as a stunt peg on the bairns bike.:thumbup

Just as well I checked, all the small needle rollers in all the dog bone & shocker pivots were still full of red grease.

But the main pivot bearing on the arm (sprocket end) was almost dry.:crazy

Time to have a bit of a tidy up & fit those feckin levers.:lol

Was gonna make an abba stand but decided to improvise with what was close to hand.

I forgot all about that Lumpy.

I am up Sunderland this week end, pm me your number and if its still ok, I have the Stella.

What you doing GF, out with that mobile road block ?

The Tuono is nearly back together, I was using all my favourite swear words this afternoon.

What a right feck on getting all the pivot bolts and rear exhaust back on.

Roll on 1st April.

I had a girlfriend who read a book by Olaf Olafson once. oh how we fell about the place laughing.

Anyway - I took my dog leg and lower bearings to bits, bad grease, but didn't take the whole swing arm off. I now have slight play in the dog leg (not picked up on MOT??) anyway - do you have any hints and tips getting swing arm back in? Sounds like it's not too easy....Just in case....hope you get it fixed and able to ride asap.

Lateral movement on the dog bone is normal and ok mucker.

Hints for removing and replacing the swinging arm :-
Have loads of blocks of wood and some wedges to pack it up at the right height when taking the main pivot bolt out.

Have plenty of space around the bike, you will be working from both sides.

Only special tool needed was the one I made as in the picture.

Hardest part was getting the rear exhaust back on, remembering to put the front dog bone bolt back in first.

Use loads of copper slip on the exhaust joints so they rotate and slide, makes it easier to align up to mounting studs on rear head.

Not really hard or technical, just need a bit of patience. Nice winter task.

Well worth doing if only for peace of mind.
