Rear wheel bearing ...the saga continues

So after using a suitably sized hammer the rear wheel bearings are out thank Fook....................but the problem is that an outer shell has been left in the wheel:rant:rant

How am I gonna get that out as i cant tap from the rear as their is a shoulder ffs.

Is it gonna be a dremel job?

Tim, is there anyway you can get any part of the shell from the other side, and use like a long flat screwdriver to slowly tap away at the race in a circular motion till it comes out.

Or how about using a welder and welding a long bolt or 2 to the race and pulling, with luck, the heat from the welder should cause the wheel to expand quicker than the metal in the race as its of denser properties.

Or, yep, looks like you are gonna have a very careful play session with a dremel, preferbly with no missus or rugrats arond to cause any distractions.

Thats ironic. The advert that pops up above your post is for bearings..go figure!!

Is there any of the bearing shell showing above the lip of the rim?

The inner section of the outer race is protected by a shoulder so I cant tap it out from the other side.

If anyone does it in the UK buy a slide hammer bearing puller as its a right pain the arse.
Ive tried heating the wheel from the other side aswell but it aint shifting i reckon the bearing was pressure forced in place without any copperslip and has oxidised on the wheel.

Any further help appreciated

ps Are the posties still on strike?
I reckon its gonna be a dremel job TBH.

Seriously, can you not temporarily place something that fits in the remaining outer race and bash it out carefully?

(Or is there nothing showing to get a purchase on?)

have this at work alot, either use a air hacksaw or dremmel and put two fine cuts about an inch apart should relive pressure and be able to tap it out
 
how about using the dremmel to put a slot in the bearing so you can get a chisel in the slot to tap it out one either side would help
 
Put it in the dishwasher !!!


Will do fook all but clean it up, so u dont get your hands dirty !!! lolololol
 
Try the heat again and spray some WD40 in there while its nice and hot, it'll still take some shocking to get it free though.
 
You should be able to knock it out from the other side with a long pointed drift. Thats how I got mine out. That and a mechanical sympathy bypass. Mind you , mine wasnt as corroded as yours looks.
 
Just a thought but looking at that pic, is it possible to get a reverse legged bearing puller to engage on the internal section where the balls sat ?

It also looks as if the wheel has been bruised at the 9 o clock posn,this may need dressing locally in the bore.

In the past I have had good results using heat on very tight crankcase bearings. Any alloy housing will expand to a greater extent than any steel bearing race with the application of heat due to the metal differences.

If the heat is enough the race will fall out under gravity..........mind you,how the wheel paint will stand up I've no idea. :dunno

Right Update

Heated the wheel upand heated a long Facom flat heated screwdriver and bent the tip over at 45 degreees as the long drift punch did not have enough purchase on the lip of the race.

After weilding a mighty club hammer at the adapted screw driver the race broke in 2 ans fell out.

jesus what a nightmare. I have scored the wheel slightly when the race was pushed out but have wet and dried the score marks so should be ok.

SO

Next procedure is to put the little *******s back in now ( new ones of course)

Ill put them in the freezer for how long? and I havent got a socket head big enough to go over the outside of the race ( need a 36mm I think) so how would you do it?

Its all gonna be worth it at the end and I have cleaned the whole of the backend and boy does it shine!!!!
 
I know i have one here :biggrin, but how about using a old spare front sprocket laid over the bearing and tapped around in a circular motion with loads of lube added to aid it going into it's new home nice and tidy.

bearing in freezer till bloody col and heat up the hub again, some oil to lube the thing to ease it in and use an old bearing if you have it or tap evenly all the way round, the cold/heat thing makes them a doddle to put in
 
I did have a spare front sprocket but my mate pinched it :nana

I havent received the new bearings yet so Ill do the rear brake clenup job first then attack the new bearings etc.

Ill keep you all informed of my progress cough cough
 
Glad to see you got it out. Don't forget the centre spacer when you fit the new bearings! Sounds obvious but I've seen it done :jack
 
If your going to freeze your bearing, dont hit it in with a hammer or it could/will crack. Use a brass or ally dolly as the punch :thumbup
