Rear brake recall. Or not.

Firstly high to everybody at the forum, I've been lurking for a while and I soon figured out this is a great site, especially for tech info, and generally the best Aprilia/RSV site I've come across. Good work!

Anyway back to business, and apologies if this is old news but I couldn't find any other similar posts on the subject despite a reasonable search. Basically I traded in my GSXR750K6 for a gorgeous all white 2008 RSVR a couple of weeks ago and I couldn't be happier. Incidentally I got it from Taz motorcycles who did me a pretty good deal and their service was good too. (I don't work for Taz and neither do any of my friends. :) Just credit where credit is due.)

However I got a call from them 3 days after it was delivered saying that Aprilia had issued a recall on all 2008 RSV's (& possibly Tuono's too I think?) for a "rear brake overhaul." Initially I was a bit irritated as I thought why wasn't it done 3 days ago when they had it but it turned out the recall hadn't been issued then, so fair enough I guess. (By the way has anybody else recieved one of these?) Therefore after I mulled it over I thought great, that should sort any potential future issues with the rear brake. I'd already done a fair bit of research before I bought the RSV so I was well aware of the potential issues with the clutch and rear brake but decided to chance it as I figured too many people owned them for it to be a massive issue.

Although I none the less started investigating about the clutch and brake issues ALOT more after the recall notice and pretty much found out ALL about them. Therefore armed with my research I called up Taz and asked exactly what this "overhaul" entailed and I was basically told that Aprilia had found a new way of bleeding their brake systems.....riiiggghhht. So what exactly have they been doing with their brakes in the past then???

I don't know what you guys think but that in my book is hardly a revelation that warrants a recall notice. Relocating the caliper and/or master cylinder(s) and re-routing the relevant cables/pipes is an overhaul in my opinion and from what I understand would cure the problems, or at least go along way to reducing the significance of the issues. (The RSV4 has a wire clutch instead of a hydraulic one and the rear brake master cyclinder is bolted on or near the heel plate.) Anyway they did the work so we shall see if either the clutch or rear brake lasts any longer than average. Although the rear brake wasn't much good when I got it but the bike was new so the brakes obviously need time to bed in as much as the engine needs running in etc. As of now I've done 400+ miles and I've noticed the rear brake seems to be improving and the clutch is still absolutely fine too so fingers crossed but we shall see.

The new bleeding system. Stand on 1 foot and whistle "i'm forever bleeding bubbles" at the same time.

They will get the air out but it will still be sh**e.
If you read the press launch for the new v4 Aprilia make some revelations.

1. We have a cable clutch cos the fluid one overheats.

2. We have moved the rear M/C away from the engine cos it overheats.

no **** sherlock.

Rearsets with relocation is 100% fix everytime with as good a brake as you will ever need. You can bleed it every which way but it will always be so so till it's away from the engine.

Hi rage rider welcome to the forum :thumbup I wont comment on the techno stuff coz spoonz is the man to ask :biggrin but my brake and clutch are fine ..for now lol.

The white rsv's are to die for mate...get some pictures posted for us to drool over :inlove

the recall issue was later bikes only sprocker.

i got the letter that said contact the dealer.

i asked the dealer and he said the recall info to them involved bleeding the rear brake again using the method a tech bulletin had already told them to use 12 months earlier and there was nothing new :dunno

some bikes are worse than others but i've ridden loads of the dealers Rsv's/tuono's as loaners and the back brake on every bike has been wooden at best.
My 2000 bike back brake was never bled once in 4 years, neither the clutch.
My 04 bike had 3 clutch M/C and 2 back brake M/C and various tweaks whilst under warranty but none of it lasted long. In fact the rear brake failed within 50 miles of leaving the dealer from new.

Same parts/same fluid on rearsets. Brakes 100%, lock anywhere at any speed so it's not the components that are the issue.

Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated! I was a bit worried about posting actually as I thought I might be making a typical newbie mistake by telling you old stuff you already knew like it was hot of the press, but either I didn't or your all very polite:grinning

As for the pics I shall post some asap although I work far too much and I'll wait for some decent weather for some nice sunny pics as it looks pretty good in the sun. Ironically I wasn't sure when I first saw it on the net and in some mags but when I saw it in the flesh, or should that be plastic, it was like an alluring sexy storm trooper...that's a slightly wrong image isn't it? I've now ruined my bike and Star Wars and made myself and possibly strom troopers sound gay! Plus my wife now thinks I want her to dress up like a storm trooper in some kinky *** game which is obviously ridic...mmmmm...

My rear brake is fine....do the small mods...bleed correctly ....add heat shield and its fine, has been for 5000 miles

Heat shield? That sounds very interesting. My mate and I pondered making something but where did you get yours? Is it custom or is someone selling rear brake/ master cylinder heat shields, and if so how easy are they to get hold of and fit?

Got mine from an aprilia dealer...the later models have them on.....£7 i think and real easy to fit.

That's odd, mines an '08 so it doesn't get much later than that in terms of models. Maybe I'm missing something either literally or I'm just blind or stupid, but I can't remember seeing anything resembling a heat shield anywhere near the rear brake master cylinder which is where I'm guessing it would/should obviously be?

My mate and I had a really thorough look around that bit of the bike as well as we were contemplating making one as I mentioned in my previous post. I think I'll go and have a good look now but given where the master cylinder is located it should be right there, either around or pretty much on it shouldn't it?

I've had a good look and I've realised I was looking for something around the resevoir, not the cylinder so once I worked that out I found it straight away and then verified on RSV.net that what I was looking at on mine was indeed the same heat shield they were selling. Subsequently I guess everything that's been done can be short of moving stuff about so I shall wait and live in hope.

Rage, just hang a 4 litre container of oil or similar with a cable tie off the rear brake pedal over night if you get any sponginess isues with you rear brake. It'll be fine by morning

Does this really work. I have been reading this method on AF1. I assume it forces the bubbles into the air pocket i nthe top of the master cylinder?

I might just try it. Surely it works for the clutch as well?

Yep it works, not sure about working on the clutch though as this i problem with the self bleed on the clutch master cylinder

Cheers, thanks for that, I'll definitely give it a go as it is a bit spongy to be honest.
