Rear brake cylinder & suspension set up

T

the turner

I've got a 2000 Mille and I fitted a new clutch master cylinder about 400 miles ago. Clutch works fine but I've since noticed the fluid has turned right dark. Is this likely to be the seals in the slave cylinder or is it nothing to worry about. I know the problems not in the new master cylinder.

Any advice appreciated.

Also, can anyone help with suspension setup. It was a one owner bike when I got it so it might still be on standard settings but the rear suspension's right stiff. It chucks me out of the seat on bumpy roads. I weigh about 14 stone and don't know what the standard settings should be and what adjustments to make from standard. I know it's a good idea to make a note of the settings as they are now and when I know the standard settings, I'll do that.

If there's any 14 stone riders out there with a good set up for mainly road riding & odd track days with any knowledge of the above, I'd appreciate your advice.

There's a suspension set up thing done by Fusebox kicking around on here somewhere.
Try in the vault, if you can't find it I think I saved it somewhere, let me know :thumbup

Fluid darkening is normal.

You can find suspension settings in the File Vault on this page, look in the workshop manual.

Also make sure the rear shock linkage has not siezed. They can sieze up if not stripped and regreased

I've heard that if the gear linkage is seized, it can snap the frame at worst. Is there a grease nipple or do u have to strip it to grease it. I might as well do all lot in one go.

Anyone got any advice to offer with the suspension setup.

Tried the file vault and when I clicked on the manual, my computer just locked up and I couldn't do owt.

Right click on the workshop and select "save as" or whatever does the same thing, from the menu and place the file on your hard drive. See if you can open it from there.

yes blackening of the fluid could be the slave cylinder seal. mine went very dark then i got a leak. replaced the seal which is a five minute job and now fine and hasn't gone dark again . make sure you give the handlebars and reservoir a tap when bleeding back. it took me ages to bleed and i had no pressure at all, i panicked and called griff. he talked me down and i worked my way round and it turned out that all it needed was a tap!

I'll get the seal cos I don't want any more clutch problems. Things were a lot simpler and cheaper when we just had cable clutches. I notice the RSV4's got a cable clutch.
Thanks, mate.

I think most sports bikes have cable clutches cos there is less to go wrong when used under competition conditions, can't think why the milles have wet systems unless it's due to having super strong clutch springs?

Having got fed up with leaking slave cylinders quite a few Sv1000 owners converted their wet clutches back to the TL cable system as the threaded boss for the cable was still on the cases, just needed a Tiller release mech & and lever.
Don't think it would be so easy on the Ape though.

I was off the road for 9 weeks (July / August)last summer waiting for clutch parts. Mine started slipping after I changed the oil and filter so I changed the oil / filter again for a different manufacture and although the oil grade's were right it still slipped.

Then I changed the plates although when I took the old ones out, they looked fine and when measured, there was nowt wrong with them.

Then I took it to a dealer who diagnosed the master cylinder and this rectified the problem.

In all, it cost over £300.00 and the worst bit was waiting for parts.

Cable clutches were a lot better.

Just got to do the slave cylinder O ring now and thats the lot done.

Famous last words :devious

that may be tempting fate a bit. I'm assuming from your nick ' the turner' we have another engineer in the house ? If so I hope you've managed to stay in work up to now.

Never been near a lathe in my life mate although I do work in the engineering business. When I was registering for RSV zone and it said enter a screen name, I looked at the packet of *** tobacco I was using to roll a cigarette and thought that'll do.
It was a packet of Dutch tobacco called "The Turner".

Think I'll start a new thread cos there's some weird and wonderful screen names on here and some of em must have a story to em.

I think there may already be a thread along those lines.

It always throws me then I have to think a name for registering on these places, this time I decided to just use my name,it only leaves the password to remember then.:dunno

Got a long list of idents on various sites scattered all over cyberspace LOL, have to write them in a book and refresh my memory when needed.Does rather screw things when I'm away from home and using someone elses computer.

If you are still woried about the fluid darkening, dont be. Its a reaction when the seal rubs on the alu slave. All the bikes that have this system do it :), you can also try it yourself, rub your finger on the inside of the slave cylinder and it will become dark :)

No need to change the seal if is not leaking.

Hydraulic clutch is softer than using the cable and since v2 engines have quite heavy clutches that is why they used this.

About your slippage problem, it could be solved diferently than changing the master cylinder, you could just sand-paper the plates and Im sure it would fix your problem. But if it works now, leave it.

About suspension, you can play around, but its quite a delicate thing and is best to leave it to someone who know what is doing :D, since suspension settings have a major effect how the bike rides.
