Rattly chain and knocking noise

Folks, Ive had my bike up on the paddock stand and had it running in gear to calibrate my gear indicator.

Anyway, with the bike running the chain does slap around quite a bit, is this normal?

Also when i spin the rear wheel I can hear a slight knocking noise like something is rattling round in there or dropping any ideas?

I think the chain tension should be set to around 25mm ?.
Mine did that and it was because a cheap ****** old chain had been fitted, the side to side play was amazing !!.

The chain slap is normal for these bikes, just check the chain tension is spot on.

Can you elaborate on the other noise a little more please?

Tension is spot on 25mm.
The nosie is like something loose in the axle like something rolling round and then dropping

LOL, it may just be some has badly fitted one of those Data Tag jobbies.

Is it inside the actual wheel rim?

if you have it running in gear on your paddock stand it will slap around and make clunking sounds, rev it up a bit and apply back brake a little and noises should go.

probably cush rubbers, they make clonking sound when the cush rubber bearings are dry or worn oval :)

just did a search for cush rubbers, I will check them out tomorrow.
Cheers guys

Possibly something inside the wheel or the tyre for that matter making the noise you describe as something falling:dunno

Remove your wheel and sprocket and check your carrier bolts are secure. I put a thread up not long ago about cush drive and eventually found that two of the bolts were virtually out and the rest were loose  one of your bolts might have fallen out...

here's the thread Cush drive

Cush drive

Good point Sprocks, they can come loose, threadlock them when you put them back together

i have a couple of used but good cush rubbers if any are shot.

Chain slap on a stand is normal as the there is no load. under normal conditions the top run of the chain would be much tighter and the suspension compressed with your lump on it tightening it further.

Hi there,

I had a rattling noise coming off my back wheel which turned out to be the bolts securing the cush rubber assembly to the rim, loctited them in when I put my new rear tyre on. They were completely loose and floating about in the chambers between the rubbers.
that was a while ago and the noise is gone. I find that the chain sorta rattles when you are in the wrong gear coming out of a corner. my 2c
