Radiator and Oil Cooler Guards

A

amb67

I'm just about to embark on making myself some radiator and oil cooler guards:-

I now have some aluminium mesh (Thanks Tim) and my edging rubber has arrived this morning.

What I'm after is some close up images of a set fitted, can anyone oblige please?

Have tried to get an idea of how they fit them from the images on Ebay etc.... but it's difficult to see if they cover the whole of the radiator or just the matrix.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Just done a little mesh work myself Amb :devious

Used a hot glue gun to stick the mesh on.

Post some pics of the radiator work you do, I was going to do mine but wasn't sure how best to do them :roll ....yet

That looks good mate, thanks for the response.

I reckon that I'm going to make them up so they just cover the delicate matrix parts of the radiators.

I'm hoping to get round to doing it this weekend so will add some piccies once completed.

That's if I can find my camera (Those pesky kids nick everything of mine)

There have been a couple of threads on here about this and I seem to remember that people have bent the mesh round the whole rad and just secured it (with wire ties? although these might melt).

By the way, just found out that my brother, who runs a marine maintenance business in Dubai, is making some carbon fibre fairings and bodywork for an R6. All I have to do is let him have some originals to make a mold from and he said he can do me some (not sure I want to send all my plastics off to Dubai for who knows how long though). Can even do it in Kevlar - a kevlar fairing, now that would be exotic.

I put up piccys later. They are held on with plastic loops attached to the inside of the fairing, then looped with tie wraps. Also I used a bit of fuse wire through the grill.

Amb where did you get the edging rubber from :dunno

Here you go mate, Click Me 2 metres does both radiator grilles and if you wanted it could do the oil cooler too. Although I think I'm going to fit my oil cooler as everyone else has - directly to the lower fairing.

I ordered mine on the Monday and it arrived on the Wednesday, pretty damn quick.

It was a ******* to fit, what I did was to trim the guard corners so they were rounded off, I then ran some insulating tape all round the perimeter of the metal mesh. I then lubed this up with some soapy water and fitted the rubber edging trim carefully.

You need to have it flat on a table top so that your effort exerted on fitted the rubber trim doesn't distort the mesh.

The tip is to use plenty of soapy water. (Washing up liquid works well)

You'll also need a good strong pair of side cutters as this rubber trim has metal inserts and is a tough bugger to cut to length.

PS. I made mine so that they are a snug fit and I then just used silicone to attach them to the edge of the rads. Take care not to get any in the matrix if you do it this way.

That's good quality edging rubber, doesn't deform when you round a bend with it.

Here's some piccies of mine.

Cheers Tim, spent about 40 minutes fitting the edging trims, have to be bloody careful not to bend the mesh.

The rads where black when I bought the bike, I assumed they were all black as standard.

Indicators are going as soon as I fins a descent replacement. Fancy a set of flush fit LED ones but they are either stupid money or look *****.

You not done your rads yet?

Very neat job there amb, will the silicone be strong enough to hold it ?

Just been out to have a look at mine and it looks like there's only the two side egdes to stick to is that how you did yours :dunno

Yeah, the silicone will hold it once set.

I made them so that they are a pretty snug fit anyhow, don't make them too big or they'll bow in the middle.

(I used to use silicone sealant to fit spoilers etc... to race cars and never lost one)

Hi all.

This is something ive also been looking into, was going to buy some rad guards as i didnt know where you could get the trim from to make my own, now i do thanks alan :thumbup. Only other thing is where did you get the mesh from? Is it stainless steel? I might be able to order a sheet through my work, what is the size? Thickness and size of mesh holes?

I think the ones on ebay are about £60 a set which i didnt think were too bad, i contacted the shop selling them and asked about how they mounted. They sent me a file with the instructions, these ones are mounted using stainless steel ties. I can send anyone the document if it would help.

Was wondering about using silicone, wouldnt the heat from the radiator affect it?

They look great by the way, well done :thumbup
