I traded my 1998 Duc 748 for the 2000.5 RSV Mille R yesterday. The Ape makes great power, but my temperature was running between 112 and 117 degrees celsius (232 to 243 fahrenheit) on the way home. Ambient temp was about 13 degrees celsius (55 fahrenheit). Are these temps normal for the Ape?

lift the tank on the left hand side as you sit on the bike is the thermo switch it sits on a round nut/plug thing..take it off and clean the contacts....also bridge across the contacts to see if the fans are working

oh yes they can get hot, esp in hot ambient temps and slow traffic
I have seen 125 twice, once when water pump failed and once with a holed rad
ck

seen mine get over 100 a couple of times in stationary summer traffic, but for the most part I get the kind of numbers others see.

Your bike's fans should go off somewhere btw 90-95C and on an open road the bike should run between 74-80c. If the temp was 117c on an open road you may have air in your cooling system. If they temp get to 117c only in town I would fired up the bike and check whether fans go off at 90-95c (maybe leave it until 100c max). If they don't go off check the following:
Connect the fans directly to a battery and see if they work.
NO -NEW FANS:)
YES
Remove temp switch calbes at the switch itself, clean all terminals with wd-40. Note where each cable goes where.
Check again,
If it doesn't work
Check the fans relay
If relay is ok and fans still don't work
Temp switch is faulty.

The fans work fine. I didn't notice at what temp they turned on, but they are definitely working.

The temp did fluctuate back and forth, regardless of my speed or if I was stopped at a light.

I'm hoping that maybe it's just air in the cooling system and the remedy is simply to top off the resevoir. We'll see this afternoon after I get home.

Thanks for the input.

The fans kicked on at about 95. Other than topping the reservoir, how does one remove air from the cooling system? Also, it seems that if it were an issue with the water pump, the temp would not have been fluctuating.
Any more ideas?

Pulled the side panel off and topped off the coolant (rather than just filling up the resevoir). Fans kicked on at 95 and promptly started dropping the temp.
Now I've got the right display flashing EFI, but that's another thread. Thanks for everyone's input.
