Hello all, fairly new to forum. As some of you might know my mille has been off the road for 2 years. Shocker I know. I got it up and running again after replacing battery, starter solenoid renewing a bit of the wireing. Starts up now first time everytime, but idles a bit rough. Not sure what that could be? needle only moves up and down by one notch or so. I have checked coils, I have new ht leads and caps and plugs. And I've checked plug gaps there at 0.7mm. I've even put some fuel system cleaner in tank. Any other ideas? Also very light smoking for the 1st 20-30secs of startup then it disappears? but then re-appears when I rev her up a bit. I've looked around on forum abit for clues on smoking. Did discover my one way valve from clutch to TB was knackered so replaced that. But there was no oil in the vacuum pipes. I also checked clutch diaphragm, thats good....so I'm still none the wiser on the smoking. And.. AND the clutch is dragging. As soon as I clunk it down into 1st gear she stalls? This is annoying me the most because I cant even take it round the block for a spin, put it under a bit of load. I've tried every way of bleeding it through. I never have problem finding neutral though, which other people DO seem to get when there clutch needs bleeding. :dunno
So HUGE re-cap
1: clutch dragging-bleeding does nothing
2: smoking at startup, re-appears a little up rev range.
3: rough idle

I know theres a load of crap here, but determined to get back on the road this year. I would appreciate ANY help and ALL suggestions. Thanks in advance

Hope this helps:

1: clutch dragging-bleeding does nothing - Suspect that the side stand switch is defective and is causing the engine to cut out when you select a gear.
2: smoking at startup, re-appears a little up rev range. - What's the smoke colour? (Is it blue or white or is it just condensation getting burnt off)
3: rough idle - If the smokes black then it could be over fuelling or just in need of a good blast up the road to clear out the TB's and exhaust!

Absolutely positive that it is purely clutch drag and not the dreaded side stand switch....?

The clutch diaphragm may well be ok, bit is it in the right place? The smoke from your description is certainly pointing to the diaphragm. I know of at least one incident where clutch plates had been changed and the diaphragm put back in the wrong sequence. The bike worked fine, but smoked like bonfire night as soon as it was under load, and when it was sat stationary, although a lot less pronounced.

Rough idle is probably the throttle bodies in need of balancing or alternatively is set a bit too low.

Good luck with getting it sorted soon :thumbup

Well, I pulled the clutch out today and the friction plates look dandy, well acording to my untrained eye and haynes manual. But the plain steel plates, christ! Some are brownish, others actually LOOK like steel, 4 or 5 are warped to about 1mm! I'm gonna get some new plates hopefully that'll sort clutch out. Acording to manual, clutch plates should gone in a certain order. only as far as, plain steel plate-1 has notch init and a friction plate has a coloured tab....They all look the same to me...? Previous owner obviously didnt care which order they went back in. Tabbed plain one was at front instead in first and coloured friction plate was in the middle somewhere. As to the smoke Amb, its white/grey.

Forgot to ask, caterpillar. Can I sync my throttle bodies myself? Do I need some fancy equipment or would screwdriver suffice?

White/grey smoke sounds like it's just condensation burning off, if the coolant levels all fine it should clear once the bikes up to temperature and been ridden for a minimum 50 miles. :thumbup

Well OK that last bit about the 50 miles might not be true but if my missus asks any of you it's an Aprilia requirement. LOL :nana
