yeah i know - you're prob as sick as i am of talking about this effing bike..
but today she failed to start could just hear a spinning sound coming from the left side of the bike...

got transport section to arrive with a heavy duty jump starter - still same.
got a bump start - started first time no bother.
got to my dealer's 14 miles away and tried again - same noise
he said sounds like starter isn't engaging the sprag or sprag is fooked

what do you guys reckon ??
- please (dont take this the wrong way) but only comment on this if you know the history as i've done all the obvious stuff and more

battery
starter solenoid
brown connector
rectifier
fuel pump
etc etc etc etc

dealer says he's gonna swap stuff out with his bike to see to try to save me money!!

if it is the sprag - i know Aprilia reccomend replacing the full sprag, but what do you guys reckon on just the spring section and keeping the outer
as it would save me £260

Bad news mate, if the starter motor spins and the engine doesn't turn over then it has to be the sprag clutch fooked.

Best engineering practice would be to replace all components in the assembly, however when it's your own money it's different.

Buy the best you can afford and you can't fail, skimp on buying cheap parts and you'll live to regret it.

Are you doing it yourself or getting a dealer to do it?

getting dealer to do it as he says its only 1 1/2 hrs work so £50 for peace of mind...
but i'll be double checking it when i get the chance

dont tell me its sick now i just bloody voted for it !!!:confused:confused

it'll be fine again by time voting finished
plus she's till beautiful

Once it's apart you can see if it's just the spring, doubt it though

Also for the time it takes to replace it, might as well do it properly.

Search, sprag clutch, aprilia, ducati, 998, 900, monster.

Apparently the sprag clutch is the same.

Mate what a bummer

Deffo get the duke sprag as it's £80 instead of £140. You need the Aprilia outer though but i'm pretty sure that is only £40 so i would change both.

I can post the duke part number if you want it. got it somewhere.

Sounds like it hasn't been spinning up your motor enough which probably explains the poor cold start. Much more effort needed to turn a cold engine than a warm one. just a pain you spent money along the way on other stuff.

Good idea on the dealer fitting though. The flywheel is a ***** to get off even with the right tools.

changed a sprag few weeks back

not to badda job to do alsong as you have the tools & some heat

Sounds like there is an alternative to the aprilia sprag.
Is there an alternative to the Aprilia "outer" as well?

hiya mate look forward to see if it is the sprag as mine was doing the same recently, i know mines a bit older but must be the same fault, Quick tip for you bud if you do happen to get stuck somewhere and its just spinning then all you got to do is stick it in gear and give it a bump not as in to start just enough to jolt the engine and 9 times out of 10 it will start up first time off the button been having to do this for the short term untill i can get the cash together to get the sprag sorted

Spoonz, is there any chance you found the ref. number for the Ducati replacement sprag inner that is compatible with the RSVz mate please?

cheers everyone - i'll mention it to my delaer - see what he says

spoonz could do with a link to that sprag for the duke that fits my 04 rsv if thats possible please pal

cheers

also the sprag is n3 parts isnt it? are you saying the other expensive part thats about £180 doesn't need replaced just the 2 parts you mentioned???

the part 70140071a pagan mentions is a direct replacement for aprilia part number 0659110 and should cost about £80 + vat.
For the housing use the Aprilia part which you should get for around £40 + vat

you also need special loctite for the flywheel but that should be done by the dealer.

You shouldn't need anything else if the dealer is doing it. If you do it yourself you want a heat source (heat gun), the lock tool and the flywheel puller.

no i'm not doing it - letting dealer do it so hope he knows what he's doing - lol
