Okay alot has already been said about poor riding standards but I was the victum of these poor standards yesterday.

We were out in the Thetford Forest area, 6 of us in a group. I had just swapped bikes with my mate RSV- ZX7R, we were riding in single file through at a good pace when coming round a left hander we came across "Horace & Dorace" in a 196x Austin Maxi doing about 25 mph.
Next thing I am over taking the Maxi at an altitude of 3 feet doing about 60 mph.

My mates ZX7 is totalled , I have a monster headache , ruined lid bumps and bruises.

What happened was that a solo rider on a Gixxer Thou had over taken another group behind us on the wrong side of the road owing to his speed then coming round the next bend encountered us slowing for Horace & Dorace....He clipped my mate and ploughed into the back of me, impacting mid exhaust effectively high siding me.

He has a broken collar bone/shoulder blade, wrote his bike off , destroyed his leathers and riding kit in general.

It was his 1st ride of 2009 !!!

Was it worth it ??

Sounds like you were lucky not to be in a worse state, I get overtaken in daft spots all the time ... when appleby fair is on its a nightmare as any bend could have dobbin and cart doing 3.7 mph yet bikes ton it past me on a bind bend with head on white line:dunno

Your mate he clipped stayed upright I guess?

Sorry to hear this Kiwi. Hope your injuries are not serious. Another member mentioned this in relation with 5 riders killed in Scotland. People who has not ridden during the winter need to take it easy the first few rides. It takes time to gain back your riding abilities.

That's awful Kiwi. Did your bike get hit? Bet your mate was right chuffed.

I ride all the year round and usually get asked to go out with various bikers at this time of the year as they've just taken their bike out of mothballs. No bloody way will I go with 'em. I did once and was horrified to see them doing all the things you've mentioned above. Their excuse (!!) was that they're a bit rusty.
Ditto going out on the first few sunny days of the year. I stay well clear of the popular routes.

Hope you're about soon mate.

My mate kept it upright (dont know how) but has a bruise the size of a pinapple on his thigh, a broken indicator and number plate.
Frankie (for the 1st time was neither a victum or the cause !), I rode to work today but am starting to stiffen up quite nicely, reckon I be rigid by 1600.

And we were riding in single file but staggered across the width of our lane as we havn't ridden together since last October so as the least rusty I was lead file..........

Once the insurance comes through we should be getting a new memeber into the fold ......................john (my mate ) loved "Frankie" :)

Pleased to hear everyone's generally ok....Hope the guy's insurance company has deep pockets. Was out yesterday and observed same...bunch of idiots on Ducati's (!!) overtaking on blind bends, weaving about in their group oblivious to anyone behind them and then slowing down on long straights(!!) Gave them a wide berth and got the hell out of Dodge!

Kiwi, Really sorry to hear about you accident mate. Glad you are OK.

To Every one. My offer from last year holds for this year if any one is interested.

I think if there gonna have there bikes mothballed during the colder months then a bit of self respect would be a refresher course. Not suggesting this be compulsory but just to get back into riding safely. Id be lying if I said I didnt ride like a *** on occasions but im out all year round.

Yeah am looking forward to getting out, think i am getting older cos i aint looking forward to it as much after reading this.

glad your ok kiwi, close call that was, did you get the maxi?

Blimey Kiwi that could have been soooo much worse, lucky there was no fatalities there  but glad your all relatively ok.

Looking forward to welcoming your mate John :thumbup

To Every one. My offer from last year holds for this year if any one is interested.

Stuart, you ever thought about doing a "Tour" ala Fusebox :devious

Glad that you're ok. In the Netherlands 4 bikers died last weekend....

Just seen on local paper website that another biker has died on the A682 gisburn road, about 5 miles from my house. Its alright living in the yorkshire dales but at this time of year we get every summer biker up here after the winter layoff so you need (like kiwi could have dome with) eyes in the back of your head.

Rip to the biker yesterday

Glad you ok mate a biker lost his life in brecon yesterday another and its only the start of the year i:dunno it,s sad

Sorry to hear that Kiwi. hope you and your mate are ok.

I ride all year and I'd like to think I'm pretty sensible. Saw a good few too many people out over doing it. We ride reasonably quick but we saw a handful of people taking some pretty daft risks. Bizarrely, lots of riders out in trainers and jeans too... dont understand that at all. It wasn't that hot!

Nice example was a Desmo in Brighton town centre riding like they were at the Track with his mate on an R7. hope they got home ok and obviously slightly jealous as they had beautuful bikes but, lads, no need for that in town and they won't stay beautiful for long if you're not careful and it doesn't do any good for our reputation with the rozzers or the public. Not jealous much, of course.

Kiwi, I've just stuck an ad up in the for sale section for my bike if your mate is interested in a very good mille R. I'm in london but I'm from Norfolk so am often up your way on route to the coast. Need to shift it in the next couple of weeks, if i don't I'll be keeping it.
Stay safe mate, hope the aches and pains don't hang around for too long.

Sometimes I get second thoughts on selling my road bike and take up karting instead.........................................

I have to admit to being one of those idiots a year or two back , but since one of my mates has lost use of a leg , one still can't use his shoulder and my dad was almost killed and will never walk properly (all from bike accidents) again I woke up and decided thats it, save it for the track and at least wait until I'm out of a built up area till I gun it.
the road I live on is 30mph and bikes race up here on full chat, I dont know how they could live with themselves if the run a kid over..

I have avoided the North Devon routes, simply because I am so rusty and can't avoid a good scratch when the opportunity arises. Spring is not the time to ride with or near strangers.
Bikes can be repaired........
