Hi all.
Can anyone give me any advice on carrying pillion passengers? My son is nearly 9 and constantly badgering me to pick him up from school on my bike. He is tall and strong for his age but i have no intention of doing this yet. Is there any law to go by or is it up to the rider cus i have great memories of my dad taking me out on his at a very early age.
Cheers guys

in romania the minimum age for a pillion on a motorcycle is 14. 7 for sidecars, no age limit if the child sits in the lap of an adult. the last one is kind of stupid if you ask me...

as long as the bike has a pillion seat and foot pegs, and the child can sit on the seat with their feet on the pegs it is ok to take them pillion ,there is no age restriction...

thanks guys. have any of you tried a young passenger?

yip I used to take my wee boy on the bike from the age of 5,when he was strong enough to hold on
never went far or fast though...he now blames me for getting him into bikes, lol

and a properly fitting helmet of course :)

Had both my Lads on from 7 and now the grandaughter age 7. Just make sure as has been said the right gear. (sure it dont need saying really) If you have a jacket which has side pockets that the kid can put his hands in you will always be able to feel his prescence. just a tip if it works for you. Good luck and ride safe Ken.

yeah cheers guys.
obviously goes without saying he has to have the gear (you know the stuff they grow out of after 10 minutes) but with the mille having no grab rails anyway (would never use with him) i have seen a pillion safety belt which basically wraps around 1 of his wrists then goes around my belly and then wraps around his other wrist. certainly seems the way to go. Just need to find one now..more cash

Hi RSV69
I was up your way a couple of weeks ago for the motorcycle festival. A good day out it was too. I started taking my daughter out on my zzr600 last year when she was 9. It has a topbox which helped. Now I have more confidence in her ability to hold on I take her out on the Mille. We use pillion handles because she was too small to reach around me properly . Also fitted non slip seat cover to pillion seat. Go for it but start with short and slow rides at first and build up. You don`t want to frighten him. Also as with any pillion, develop some kind of simple communication system and explain what you expect them to do. And most importantly don`t forget you have a precious cargo on the back if the red mist decends.

My Daughter has been riding pillion on a Goldwing since she was 5 (pillion seat has a backrest and arms!). She's now 9 and pestering me to take her out, but whilst she might be strong enough, I can't trust her to pay attention for very long. She therefore want's me to get a goldwing - Dream On.
