Photos of My boys Snetterton Crash

M

Mick Oliver

Some of you asked for the photos of my boys crash as the photographer was at the corner when it happened in the first one you can see the wheels in the air in the top sideways to the track.

Here are photos he was the one on the Green ZX9 with the black/grey RST leathers and Rossi rep lid and ended up today with a badly bruised ankle and the bike needs new nose cone left hand panel foot rest and alternator cover, screen left hand bar and new tank so if anybody has parts in thier garage that would be of any use to us let us know because he needs to get it back on the road to use for work.

Sorry for the number of photos but this is rare to get a photographer at the spot to record for the future

Those images are absolutely amazing.

Glad to hear your lad is ok though, thank god for that. Hope he gets well soon. :thumbup

Mind if I post those images on another forum I frequent?. I will save them and host them on my own webspace so no hotlinking will take place. :biggrin

Feel free to post :thumbup

yeah ditto on that.
As i was looking through them i was like crash, crash, crash oh dear, oh **** fire, more fire ****, OK THAT BIKE IS ON FIRE BIG TIME NOW......

Has he got to buy the other guy a new bike now?

There have been at least 2 civil cases where someone has successfully received compensation from another rider after trackday accidents, However you would have to prove that the person causing the accident was out of control due to riding in a hazardous manner (I would have thought).

I just hope that the many riders wanting to/yet to do a trackday on the forum (and others) are not put off by these pictures, that said a trackday is still safer than the road so rather than scare the bejesus out of people I think it serves as a good remainder that while accidents can and do happen trackday's are still an absolute blast and are still a safe way to go and ride fast and have fun.

I am glad the injuries were limited and wish all a speedy recovery.

I dont know Mick, his son or the circumstances so my comments are generalisation's and not aimed at any specific person.

WOW, glad the riders are OK. Amazing series of pics, those guys that cover the Focussed Events trackdays are really good aren't they?

Hi Mick....Just caught the first thread, heart in the mouth time eh? My nipper has just bought his first ped and I do hope he will be a better/safer rider than me.

Bummer that he needs the bike for work....

Is anyone else concerned that the visors on both riders helmets have either come off of flipped up...when you face plant, a visor is quite handy.

One of the lads over on the TMH forums that I posted the pics on said that the series of pics if you scroll down the page quickly looked almost "animated" and in series.

To that end he Photoshoped it to this, so I thought I would post the animated .gif here :-

Awesome Ecosse :thumbup

I bet the guy on the gixxer was chuffed to bits with him.

Glad he is ok though

Hi all, The guy in the GSXR was me, thanks for you messages of support, I suffered from minor concussion and a broken wrist as well as the bruises you would expect.

I have to wear a pot from elbow to fingers with my thumb in the 'thumbs up' position, looks a bit silly and makes it hard to get my sleeve over but they said it's the best position for the wrist to re-set and six weeks should fly by.

Just to clear a few things up:-

The fire
It was an oil fire rather than petrol, the generator cover was smashed during the crash allowing hot oil to rush out and at that temperature the sparks from the sliding bike easily ignited it. It was more of a flash fire than anything else but from my position all I could see was a big fire ball, after rolling over and over I didn't know if it was my bike or Mick’s lads or another bike entirely. Fortunately there were only the two bikes involved so credit to the two riders directly behind who managed to avoid the situation.

Damage
Kawasaki - as outlined at start of thread.
GSXR - Not as bad as it may appear as nothing actually got burnt so it’s mostly impact damaged plastics, the gen cover, clip on’s, exhaust hanger, exhaust end can, rear sets, tank and skid lid. The frame is dented but it’ll do.

Civil cases, personal injury claims and disclaimers
When you attend a track day you sign a disclaimer which protects the track operators and the event organisers from claims lodged against them (subject to them operating within their guidelines), the fact that everybody has sign this disclaimer does not give everyone on track a licence to behave in a reckless fashion, the individual is still responsible for their actions and if through those actions they cause damage to people or property they can expect to have an civil case lodged against them. In this particular case with the photographic evidence supported by the video from the track operators there is no question that the Kawasaki came in way too hot passed two riders with the back wheel locked further lost control resulting in a high side and hit the third.

My position
I’ve spoken to Mark (Mick’s lad) who accepts that he got it all wrong and has said he will buy parts to repair my bike. I think that’s only fair and would be happy with that outcome despite the broken wrist and time off work. However if he were not so honourable I would have no option but to take the legal route to reclaim my losses, losses which would then include legal fees and a personal injury claim. I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t want that bill especially with no insurance company to pick up the tab!

Track days
For anyone having second thoughts about track days please don't let these pictures discourage you, this is a very unusual situation, yes people 'get it wrong' all the time but they don't usually make contact with another rider, every track day I've been to they always stress at the briefing 'Look after the guy in front' and I think that’s the mentality the majority of the field go out with. I’ve got another day booked in five weeks (the same week the pot comes off) so it must be worth it!!

I hope that covers any loose ends people were asking about and if anyone wants any photos of damage or even my wrist x ray you've only to ask.

Thanks for those comments Nathan. It looks like common sense prevailed.

awesome pics glad your lad was ok poor Nathan got the rum deal out of that crash for sure

Glad its all worked out

I wonder can you buy Insurance for this kind of thing because IMHO, you would be off your face or just plain mad to expose yourself to this kind of risk, If there were a fatality or a very serious injury you would be financially ruined.

It would make a divorce seem cheap

Trackday insurance is available, I usually just take out a health one , but you can take out one to cover the bike but its over £200 for the day.

When you think about it, its safer than the riding fast on the road !!
