The first day it stopped raining and i went for a cruise. After about 10kms, in the middle of a corner the bike just went dead. Luckily i was not on the way to work as i use the bike to commute. The problem was the speed sensor had shorted out. When it happened all i could sus out was that the 15 amp fuse kept blowing. The bike shop found the fault. A week before the only indication of the coming problem was after i filled up with petrol and as i left the speedo showed zero for about 2 kms. I had been riding to work in constant rain and also went through a flooded section (shat myself as cars ahead were breaking heavily, it came up fast) I thought warranty would cover, but not any more. The original owner had 4years, but its only valid for original owner. Pissed off about that one! I love my bike but what next?? Its just had the stator and regulator fail, that took 3 mths as there were no parts in Aus. I love twins and I don't want to go jap, but its got my mind ticking over. i hope this is the end of my troubles:pirate.

Steve these things do seem to come thick and fast some times don't they?

I think it must be the Italian heritage :dunno although to be fair my Suzuki SV1000s is also prone to the ' Brown connector' problem ( although it's Green on a Suz) and it has also blown it's clutch slave seal !

Does have a better rear brake, but the Mille one works fine tho'

Hope you can get it all sorted ok, but the grass is not always greener on the Jap side of the fence.

Just thinking of all the hassles that Jap bikes have put me though over the years - regularly blown rectifiers and other electrical hassles, cases and forks that corrode as soon as it starts raining 20 miles away, snapped exhaust studs, cheese-headed casing screws, cam chain woes - dropped valves (on variious CX500s) they ain't perfect.
I even had an R/80 boxer engine destroy itself on the A40 one time - weight came off the crankshaft and bounced around inside - not a thing left serviceable.
And as for jap two-strokes, my record was five miles between piston replacements on an RD350 aircooled.
So no, nothing's perfect - but the difference is that a ten-year-old Ape is worth spending out on to get it back on the road - not becasue of its value but because it's a great bike. Most ten-year-old jap bikes aren't.
Hope your gives now you a period of peace and reliability so you can bond with it.
