just wondered if everyone leaves optimiser on all the time ,ive been plugging bike in every weekend for a day or so but battery is showing fully charged within a couple of minutes of plugging in.i got optimiser off ebay but it didnt come with any instructions. cheers

I have an Optimate 4 and leave it hooked up whenever I'm not using the bike. I also make sure I hook it up first THEN switch it on, so it can monitor/charge the battery correctly. :thumbup

if you google optimiser i bet you could down load instructions

Is it an Oxford Oximiser? I think an "optimiser" is a generic monitoring charger :dunno

I have mine on a timer , it turns off for an hour each night at midnight , that way when it turns back on it has to test the battery all over again.

Its an Optimate Series III or IV (not that it matters as they all work in pretty much the same way)

The whole idea of the optimates and the oxford equivalent is that they are trickle chargers which means they will not over charge and damage the battery so you could plug it in in october unplug it in april and your battery will be in tip top condition.

Plug mine in every two weeks if not using bike, and have not had a problem, the charger shows 4 out 5 LED's on initial start but the 5th comes on almost straight away. Had bike over 3 years and original battery. Meta alarm fitted.

That's if the person using it knows how it works!

I left my bike/Optimate with a mate for 2 weeks and he saw the "power on" light and thought it was charging! :roll

I turn mine off/on almost every day out of habit, thinking it's helping it work better!. The bike is kept outside :unhappy

Just a quick word of warning lads! If you leave the Optimiser hooked up continuosly there is a danger you will gas the battery dry. I did this to my 'Varta' battery, then it would not crank the engine over, although the Optimiser was showing green and there was 13.2 volts at the terminals off load. I rushed out and bought a new battery. However, I hate throwing things away. So, despite warnings not to pull the plugs and refill the battery, when I did fill so, using de-ionised (distilled) water.. guess what? The old battery fired up a stone cold motor!

I'm not saying you're wrong but surely the guys who make the Optimate wouldn't sell something that could ****-up yer battery? :dunno

Heaven forbid :devious

Would your government lie to you ?

Would an unfriendly policeman bend the truth to get a conviction ?

Trust no one ! The truth is out there

Why bother with one ? Just start your bike and run it up to temperature every week. Job done :thumbup
