Hi... RSV 02... has starting issues... which after 'searching' worries me... only got it friday night (got soaked picking it up... lol) the bike wont start on choke (floods it)... or without choke when cold... only with a tiny tiny amount of throttle... just to make the engine 'catch'... then it will idle beautifullly... once warm will start 1st prod of the button without any throttle... just as normal !! :dunno

apparentley this is bad for the sprag clutch... is this correct... or are we talking huge amounts of throttle when starting !? :confused

theres no EFI problems showing... & dont want to kill me sprag !!

is it just a simple TB & CO adjustment required ?? :dunno

ps bike has a Evolution chip... a cut blue/green ECU wire... airbox derestricted (4" hole)... but standard air filter?... works as above with standard can... but seems to get worse with the race can fitted... seems to make it flood more... surely race cans lean the mixture ?? :biggrin

pps iv stuck pics on me Photobook if ya want to see any pics or videos of above aftermarket bits !! :devious

Many thanks... Brian

I'm not an expert, but it doesn't sound particularly *Scooby doo mode on* spraggy */off* to me, as I'm led to believe that the starting issues are there cold or warm.

Hi Brian,

Welcome to the forum. You said that your bike gets flooded when using the fast iddle, it could be but I would check the following. I would start checking whether your fast iddle is actualy working at all. It sometimes comes loose. To make sure it works, You will have to raise the petrol tank and check the mechanism and cable. Your bike will not start when cold without the fast iddle actioned or with throttle (which can damage your sprag). If flast iddle is in good working order, then I'd check the spark plugs.

Good luck

I would get the TPS and TB's setup just so you know it's right. Will probably sweeten the bike up anyway and it's a lot cheaper than a sprag clutch if it improves the starting.

In my experience from cold, Fast Idle and nothing else is all that's neede to start it if all is well.
Some aftermarket chips have a habit of raising the idle which owners correct with the idle adjust but that can have the affect of throwing the other settings out.
My Arrow chip used to raise the idle 500rpm compared to oem.

Sounds like the same problem people get with the american factory pro chip, that was a sod to start from cold to,have a look on AF1 site or PM Dr Rossi who will make a chip to your requirements & he's not expensive

thanks... i put new gapped sparkies in... yes... 4 of them... lol... but old ones seemed fine (still did it on old ones)... i should of checked a fast idle mech when i was doing all this... doh... lol !! :biggrin

il get Southern Cross to check things over... would a GP race can make it richer or leaner... bike just smells of petrol when its fitted... maybe ECU over compensating !? :dunno

appreiciate all the replies so far !! :thumbup

Race cans lean the mixture generally but the aftermarket chip may be dumping a lot more fuel than standard in the motor.

The Tb sync etc will affect first 1/3 ish throttle opening. If the bike smells a lot on low throttle/overun then it could well be your problem.

I did Sabre's bike not long ago after he had a Gabro chip fitted. His rear cylinder was runing at over 7% Co as apposed to the 3.5 -4 it should have been. His smelt of fuel big time also which is why he wanted it checked.

sorry to hi-jack but it may be to the common good as i have this same problem with my 03 since about 4 months ago fitting a gabro chip for my race can and evo air box, the chip also has 5 deg ig advance and now the bike is very prone to flooding.

I had it set up on the ega at the time to 3.5% as recommended but am considering going back to standard as this can be a bit of a problem for me as i ride the bike everyday. It generally happpens after the bike has been sat over the weekend but other times too. It usually starts after 1 second or so of starter but If it doesn;t start on the first 3/4 cranks it won't start at all until left for a few hours. This happens probably once every 20 cold starts.

Should i wind the idle up?

Most people i know run the oem chip at 3.5% also.

The manual stated level of 1.5% i think from memory is to lean and more about emissions than anything else.
The bike runs much hotter set that way and is prone to surging. You can give it a whirl but if the chip you have isn't fueling correctly i would change the chip.

cheers... il get the TB's & CO set up 1st & see how it runs !! :thumbup
