I got a new battery about 18 months ago when the bike was having some starting problems; hadn't found this forum then, so fitted straight replacement (YTX12BS). :rant
This made things better, (old battery was knackered I think) but still not perfect. Yamaha solenoid was next (no improvement noticable) and eventually when the damn thing would only fire up one time in three, with associated clanging noises, I got the sprag done.
That fixed it.
Having sold a couple of my children to fund the repair, I'm fairly paranoid about the whole starting thing now. Don't touch the throttle, don't churn it over too long, don't try to start with a flat battery......:crazy
Anyhow, often when starting with fast idle lever to the max, the engine revs quite fast as it fires - "AAAAAAAARGHHH, that could bugger the sprag" I think, every time (see, paranoid).
This weekend after the poor thing had been sat outside in the cold & damp all day, I started it using my new part-fast-idle lever method - it failed to catch first time - then wouldn't start second time (cold ice running in the veins all of a sudden). Not third time lucky either... Finally, RSV Zone patented, if all else fails, wind-the-throttle-on-while-cranking-then-let-go-quickly-once-it-fires method did the trick. :doug
So as the cold damp weather is here and that's always going to cause trouble, I have questions.
1) Am I being a **** to worry about the whole fast-revving thing when starting on full fast-idle lever? Should I just thank the god of Italian motorbikes that it's started at all?
2) I'm getting a better battery to make the whole thing as worry free as possible, but I've read some threads on here and seen recommendations to get YTX14BS, YTZ14BS and YTZ14SBS; the only consensus seems to be that anything is better than the AAA duracell fitted as standard. So, this is where I ask what is the money no object, best battery for the job - and where you all tell me it's what you've got fitted........
By the way, when parked up at home, it's always plugged into an Optimiser. Most of the time I even remember to turn it on.
