hi was wondering how much oil my 04 rsvr should use?? topped it up the other day and it dropped already? cant find any leaks etc ,, cheers.

Are you checking the oil in the correct way? These are dry sump engines and checking the oil is not simply looking in the sight tube

The correct way is to take the bike for at least a 20 minute ride to warm everything up and to circulate the oil around the engine. Stop some where safe and flat and switch off the engine. Now immediately look in the sight tube, the oil level should be no more than 2/3rds the way up the sight tube, any more and oil will be forced into the airbox. This is the recommended method by Aprilia. Another way is to warm the bike up until at normal operating temperature is reached. Then holding the revs at 4000rpm, check the site tube. Again no more than 2/3rds the way up the sight tube.

you know i have had 3 rsv's and never done it that way lol. thanks for the info i will do just that . kind regards ...mak

i have read an article on endurance racing featuring a GSX-R 1000. During the 24 hr race the team see it as ' normal ' to use 2.5 litres of oil and subsequently cater to top up during the race. Moral of the story is > if you ride your bike hard it will ' use ' oil and that is also my personal experience on my RSR-R. Note : it ' uses ' oil without smoking, if it does, you have a problem.

Then again if I ride like a normal human being, ( seldom ), then the oil usage is minimal.
keep the rubber on the tarmac

Heeeeeeelp!!!!

I checked my oil this evening after I got home, 45min ride, and there was nothing in the sight glass  Am I checking it wrong? switched off and checked. Admittedly our drive is a bit lumpy, so moved to a flatter bit but still just nothing there. If there is nothing, then why didn't the oil panic light come on? How much do I put in to top it up if it doesn't have a sump? It'll have to wait until the weekend now though, don't have time to do anything in the morning and I've no lights in my garage to be doing it now. Ho-hum, car in the morning I guess :(

Si, the oil light is a low oil pressure light. It sounds like you're checking the oil level correctly, switch off engine then check sight tube

I would put in 1/4 litre now and go for a ride then check again. If needed, add a little more until you get the level about 1/3 to 1/2 the way up the sight tube

Same thing happend to me dude, to be safe i did a full oil and filter change, whats £30 and about 20 mins work for what could be a very costly mistake, i diddent want to just top up so i could check everything was ok.
