oil tank level

another question thats been asked before I'm sure, this tme regarding the oil level, I see in the handbook that the oil level from cold may not be showing on the sight glass but as long as the oil pressure light goes out when the engine runs its ok. Now I've had several dry sump bikes in the past and probably all of them would wet sump over a period of time but refill the tank quickly when started. What I'd like to know is how long would the engine needs to run before the oil tank level returns to "normal" as I don't really want to top up and then the first time I use the bike I lose oil everywhere.

Give mine 10mls as it should be up to temp "The oil that is " never had a problem in 6yr doing it that way but it probably needs less .:thumbup

I ran the engine on slightly fast idle and with the engine temp raising kept an eye on the oil sight glass, temp only up to low 50c and still nothing on the sight glass, switched off at that, still nothing showing. I may change the oil and filter before use.
On another point, the coolant water level window is useless, nothing new there, I found then that it was over filled, syphoned some out to about the right level.

When I first got my bike I had the same worry. When cold oil level wouldn't show with bike vertical, or even lent 10 degrees to the r/h/s. But get it up to running temp (70+C) and it sits nicely in middle of sight tube.

I am reliably told that the only way to check level is with engine up to full running temp.

Thanks guys for all the replies, as I haven't used the bike yet I haven't had it up to temp, I feel a little easier about the lack of oil showing now, I always keep a watch on the oil light and that goes out straight away and stays out. Looking forward to being fully fit and the weather coming good

You need to actually ride for at least five miles.switch engine off, wait two minutes then check its between marks,(I don't think watching oil lights a good idea) lots of RSV owners overfill them because they don't know how to check level properly.Do like I said and you get a gold star
