oil light on... & checking level !?

just gone too start my bike & oil light has come on... well... stayed on... with engine going... now i know your suppose too give it a quick run before checking but im abit dubious doing this with the light on... so i left it run listening to any noises until it got upto 84 degrees (around 4mins) when the fans kicked in... then left it 3 mins & checked the level with it upright (took panel off 1st for clearer view)... & theres no oil in the tube !? :eek:

i dont want too be putting oil in it if im not checking it correctly or its just the sensor or something !? :confused

would what iv done suffice !? :dunno

light hasnt been on since this morning & no oil patches anywhere !? :confused
 
It probably needs some oil - when was the last time you checked it?

They do burn oil, not huge amounts, but they do burn it.
 
The oil light is a low oil pressure light. I would put in 1/4 litre and go for a gentle run keeping the revs low, for 15 minutes or so. Get back home switch off engine and immediately check the oil sight tube. This will give you an accuarate oil level, no more than 2/3 the way up so add if necessary. Once you got a correct oil level then investigate further if the oil pressure light is still on.

thanks guys... its weird thats its just suddenly come on this morning... & not before !! :thumbup

il give it a gentle run when i finish work... so what normally happens to the oil... does it stay in the engine then gets released into the sump when started then fills up the tube ?? :dunno
 
I don't think there is a sump as such :dunno the oil is contained in the oil tank, oil cooler & filter housing etc
The oil light is low pressure warning light which will only stay on if there is insufficient oil bieng pumped round to maintain the pressure so you could basically run it dry before this comes on.
I always check mine on the paddock stand before I go out and make sure its on at least minimum, then some times check it when hot as the oil expands, if you overfill the oil tank it spits it into the air box.
As said before they do burn a bit of oil so you need to keep an eye on the level.
 
well rode it for 20 mins but very very gentley... with the panel off... pulling over every few minutes too check the oil level with bike upright... level all fine (3/4) but oil light still on... then when i stopped completeley... left it 3 mins & checked level again... still fine... halfway between empty/full... so added just a little bit more to just below max... switched ignition on & the oil light is still on !? :dunno

so could it be a faulty senser !? :confused

i parked it somewhere clean from oil stains & there was no drops or leaks overnight !? :thumbup

this bike is starting too annoy me again !! :angry

If the oil light is on when the bike is running it's proberbly a faulty pressure switch, but I think you need to do a pressure test before riding it again incase the pump is knackered. Im sure it tells you how to do this in the manual, otherwise it will be bye bye engine.:eek:

Nikfubar put you on the right track.....refer to the Manual. You can find it in (File Vault) on this site. You'll be amazed how much you can learn from it :thumbup
 
Just had a look, the oil pressure switch is below the coolant header tank next to the master cylinder, it has a single wire going to it. You have to remove this and fit a pressure guage warm the bike up to 80c and you need a minimum of 0.5 bar of pressure at 1200 rpm.
If you don't get 0.5 bar then it's time to investigate the oil pump and drive.

iv just spoke too Southern Cross... apparentley the switch is very weak in design & often go... iv just had a look at mine & it looks really manky... so il try that 1st as they only about £10 plus they'll check it over anyways !! :biggrin

im sure this bike has got it in for me since it got reversed over months back... never had a problem before then... it was bliss !! :eek:

just quick update... fitted new oil pressure senser this morning... all good again... thanks again too Southern Cross Guys... lol !! :thumbup
