Oil leak diagnosis

Just took my '01 RSVR out for the first time since it was put away for winter, it resulted in an oil leak. Ive stripped the fairings off and have located the leak, it seems to be coming from the centre joint of the engine above where the clutch sits, near the bottom engine mount.
I have an open hooked air filter fitted and also noticed that there is excessive oil in the oil breather filter and a small patch of oil on the air filter next to the breather.
Anyone had similar or can suggest what the problem may be? Im thinking a seal or something, not done any proper engine work before but i like to have a crack at things myself before submission to the the garage.
Cheers
Rob

may be you always find oil in the airbox esp if it is over filled bont know about mine as ive not been out since the open filter was fitted

I had a similar problem and it was the rear mount of the engine.
the castle nut was not torqued up properly and if it is left loose when you tighten up the mounting bolt it pulls the engine casting apart and causes a leak.
It is the castle nut on the right hand side and think it is torqued up at a low setting.
But mine had been fine and then developed the leak after a year or so and now it is fine.

Thanks for the ideas fellas, definately not overfilled it and no trace of oil running down from the airbox. Mick i think you may be bang on as i fitted some new crash bungs into the rear mount the other day.

Not quite sure where you mean :confused but it's not coming out of the water pump drain hole is it. This can leak oil or water depending on which seal has gone. Mine's weeping oil :roll

Nik its not there mate, its leaking along the joint that runs down the centre of the engine, level whith the top of the rear shock where there is a kind of shelf. Thanks for your input though
