Hi All, does anyone know if an older RSV/Tuoldo shock (AP8240) will fit a post-06 Tuono? Anyone done it?

NOPE.

Different length, different damping rate, you need a shock for an RSVR 04-09 or a Gen II Tuono - AP351 according to Ohlins or the cheaper OEM unit for the RSVR Factory from AF1 or off eBay

I thought the answer was actually YES.

However you need a different mounting kit. (the triangular plates off bottom of shock) ?

Sorry Weeksy - the answer is NO.

It isn't practical.

The Gen 1 & Gen 2 Tuono's have different frames, & swing arms. The Dog bones and link plates are different, and simply swapping one set for the other will not correct the fact that the amount of travel on the two shocks is different.

You have most likely been told about the early mille 98-99 units that can be fitted to late milles 00-03 or Tuoldo's if you swap the dogbone & link plate. These can also be rebuilt to fit the Gen1. Note - if you swap the dog bones it fouls 2+2 exhaust collectors. (Bit of a hassle on a Gen II)

It may be possible to take the unit to a suspension professional and have it rebuilt to suit, but as the correct unit can be bought brand new for £400 it isn't worth the hassle.

Bloody hell, they are pricey. Think i'll stick to what i've got - being a tight **** & all that. Is the difference that much?

You can pick up used units from either breakers or people who have sold their bikes and replaced the stock unit for a lot less than the £400 cost new.

IMHO they are worth it. The Rear shock on the Gen II is a real POS. It is so harsh and fades so quickly. If you ride an Ohlins (or equivalent) equipped bike it will amaze you. The front forks aren't really that bad - a proper set-up is mostly enough.

It isn't just about lean angle or corner speed - the Ohlins is so smooth in comparison it is easier to ride on bumpy roads, less tiring etc.

FWIW this isn't just my opinion, check out our sister forum on AF1 - loads of riders will attest to the difference this unit makes, Ed & Co at AF1 also will tell you the forks are OK if you swap the shock.

Sadly Aprilia chose to put a really cheap shock on the Tuono R - even the Sachs unit on the RSVR is a better piece of kit, but used the price difference is slight so you are better off with the Ohlins. (Or Manxton, or whoever)
