Not far from you!
Hi Folks!

Yes, another mille that reset everything on the dash(Today), 04 new shape.

Ive browsed a few threads on here and researched this matter to why it happens though no one seems certain if it happen's more than once and the true cause of the problem.
If Aprilia are aware Milles Manufactured around 03/04 had a problem why havent they done a recall, surely its a deffective item?

Mine reset when i was working on the bike today, i disconnected the battery (2 weeks old), worked on the bike for about 6 hours then hooked it back up and it was all fooked :rant
What seems bizzarre is i have a new battery, a new 150amp soleniod (installed 2 weeks ago) but yet it still happens?. It was serviced 2 weeks ago and fires first time, strong start!

In the past ive been known to take the battery completely off the bike for weeks at a time and its been fine up till today :dunno

Your thoughts would be much appreciated guys, id like to get it sorted and dont want it happening again.
Can i get back the original mileage and how do i convert back to mph? (Ive seen Alans document on how to change to mph in another thread, but thats for pre 04 milles isnt it?)

Thanks in advance :thumbup

It was a warranty issue back in 2004/5 i think but most didnt get sorted, some are not troubled by this, mine reset but only when left a few hours without a battery, leaving it a few minutes to change a battery over it was fine

Been told it can be the way you reconnect the battery but dont know about that and i aint going to try it

You cant get the mileage back.............you could look for an 06 dash with similar mileage

There was no recall because owners/dealers were supposed to replace affected bikes as part of the warranty process. My 04 had the same problem but my dealer had it changed in mid 2004 under warranty.

Not being a safety issue meant they didn't need to escalate it beyond that. The fault lies with the memory chip in the speedo and there is no fix for affected clocks.
As soon as the chip loses power it loses the mileage memory but i'm told if you leave the key in the ignition whilst battery is off the memory remains. (can't confirm that)

As it stands all you can do is keep mot's etc as validation of the mileage or buy another speedo from a breaker/ebay with similar miles.

when i brought mine it had just reset, i thought the dealer was taking the piss! did not put me off buying it though, just keep hold of your old mots.

Don't worry about it......keep your paper proof & be honest when you sell it...or don't keep your paperwork and sell as seen....seriously though, my understanding is the clocks should only re-set once!

Thanks for your comments and advice guys! :thumbup

Spoonz am i right in thinking the dash has its own internal power source feeding this chip and thats whats failed resulting in this reset or is it the chip itself thats faulty?

I brought the bike with 8500miles on the clock 6 months ago, i recon this is the first time its reset, the over all condition of the bike is good so i believe that to be its genuine mileage from new.
It had MOT 2 weeks ago so all mileage logged/documented, i guess ill just have to put up with it :rant
Bet a second hand dash aint cheap lol. Might be worth considering having the mileage correction done by pro's in that field?

Im just worried if such a thing can happen once it can happen again! Dont want to waste money on correcting the mileage for it to reset again :confused

Newboots mate why you think it only happens once?

The mileage chip should hold it's memory even without a power source much like a car etc or your ecu eeprom. Basically there was a design issue which meant the original chip didn't hold it's memory as it should when power was removed and so it reset. I think the mod was a capacitor to prevent spikeing of the chip resetting it's memory or something.

My bike was very new when the clocks were changed (70 miles) so it only reset once but i'm pretty sure there are documented cases on af1 of multiple resets.

Thanks spoonz.

Say i was to just leave it and forget about it, when the MOT is due will this be questioned? could it even fail? I know they write all that info down.

Sounds like a silly question but i have no idea!?

Nothing to test in respect of the mileage mate.

Mine has done it twice but twhen i renewed the battery over a year ago it was ok. The capacitor was a mod on the pre 04 models i think......AF1 has all the info on that one i'm sure

similar thing but the pre 04 capacitor was to prevent clock, rev counter etc resetting on startup.

There is no mod for the post 04 clocks that i know of but i believe the mod Marrelli did was a surface mount capacitor to prevent spiking.
