Old girl's been of the road for a few days while having a puncture fixed, fitting 16-tooth sprocket and general fiddling.
Went to fire her up tonight and: clank clank clank weeeeeee.
On the Optimate at the moment (fooling myself) but you and I both know it's the bleedin' sprag gone, don't we.
My fault - knew the RSV rep but still kept thumbing that button.
I'll search out the instructions that I know are on here somewhere, find the Ducati part number and get a 14a battery on order, etc.
Meanwhile, anyone got any tips on sprag changing?
Do you need any special tools?
Is the Duke part more durable or just cheaper?
seem to remember hearing about a wiring mod to help charging/starting - anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks.

you need a puller and maybe an acetelyne torch to melt the loctite glue
fiddly job get your dealer to do it pal... mine snapped 2 fly wheel pullers

search the af1 site for the wiring mod, its under the futura part of the site.

I've never done a sprag, but best of luck

Thanks Gaz. Brrrr, that was a weird experience venturing into the Futura section - people who ride them must be, well a bit strange, like some mutant sub-species of Aprilia rider. Relieved to be back here.

Sorry great1, thanks to you too. Sounds like you've done a sprag yourself - any tips (apart from go and give the:jack at my local dealers 500+ quid)?
Any advice welcome.

The ducati sprag is the same part. Just ducati don't load the price as much as Aprilia. yo still need the aprilia housing which will be scored as well.

you will need a puller and a locking tool or similar to stop the engine turning.

You MUST loctite the flywheel back on with the correct stuff or equivalent.
I just came across a falco done by some guys mate whos is a "mechanic" :jack. He thought he knew better and now the poor bloke has a sheared woodruff key,a damaged flywheel and a crankshaft key slot that's knacked. an expensive lesson.
Make sure you use the proper gasket when refitting the cover too. don't use instant Gasket or similar.

Do it by the book or get a dealer to do it is the moral of the story.

Very sound advice indeed to avert disaster as you have described on that Falco.

Thanks all.
Going home tonight to hit the button (briefly!) after 24-hours on the Optimate in the desperate hope that it's just a lazy battery - wish me luck.
If it starts, I swear I'll get a new big battery, change the relay and stick some heavy-duty wire in there immediatly (OK, as soon as I've given it a blast to try out that smaller front sprocket).
If it doesn't I'm gonna get technical on its ass.

just been down my garage and its a right mess
spring around the sprag is completely gone. major scouring on the casing too and the circlip that seems to hold it in place is trashed

glad dealer is doing it but he said its gonna cost me about £450

spoonz he's had some right trouble getting the fly wheel off (put it this way bike has been ingarage for 2 and a half weeks) how many hours should be acceptable for this job as i think he's quoting me about 3 or 4

heat is the key.

Just when you think it's very hot, get it a bit hotter.
Before i have had lots of tension on the puller and then used some leverage behind the flywheel with some tyre levers wrapped in a rag to protect the metal. You have to be very careful but the extra bit of leverage can just break the threadlock seal and then the puller will take it off the rest of the way easily.

i had mine off this way to remove the flywheel weight cos it was a stubborn s.o.a.b

Labour is hard to say. i would ask for a fixed price if it were me before committing. If they do it quicker they win but if it's a bitch you win.

They know what Aprilia allows labour wise if it's under warranty and it ain't 3 -4 hours. Even though it might actaully take them that long if it's their first or a particular bitch to get apart.

Once the flywheel is off it's reasonably quick to be honest.

Make sure they don't re use the same oil unlike the numpty that i mentioned who did the Falco sprag or attempted too.

Just a quick update for all of you who offered help and advice. She started on the button with a jump so hopefully sprag job can be put off for a while yet. New beefy battery coming and Yam relay on order. I'll sort out the wiring over the winter so I won't have to cry wolf again!

good luck A303, i had a weak start and i though i fecking spragged it, new battery and life is good again, look forward to hearing about the winter fix-it sessions.
