Hi all,
just brought a 03 plate RSV1000, went and collected it i heard it running it was started several times in front of me, got it back home and it now wont start!!

does anyone know of any common faults that may be the cause of this little problem??

it cranks over fine it just wont spring to life

cheers for all help in advance Richard

What EXACTLY happens when you press the starter button ? & does it have the fast idle lever on the left clipon ?

is the fast idle leaver on the left handle bar just after the grip? if so yes.
tried it both with this on and without this on.
when you push the start button its turning over fine its just not starting up

the guy i brought it off said turn the ignition on twist the handle twice put the choke on then puch the start button with out turning the throttle.

is this the way you would start it up?

Nope,

Never ever touch the throttle on normal starting procedure. From cold, cold start lever on full, press starter. RSV's should start within a few seconds of hitting the starter. If they don't, then there is a fault. It could be a number of things.

Flooded
Weak knackered battery
Poor starter solenoid
Poor condition spark plugs

These are the most obvious

If the battery is turning the bike over correctly, then you can try this method. Hold the throttle open fully and hit the starter. Repeat a few times but be ready to shut the throttle immediatley if she fires. This may cure the flooded issue to get the bike started, however if it's not starting instantly from here on then more investigation is required. Don't keep trying starting her if she's not starting correctly, you'll ruin the Sprag clutch and this gets expensive

do a search on "Battery" and "poor starting"

nope , never ever use the throttle to start an RSV ........
Ignition on
kill switch off
fast idle to max
hit starter button - If it doesnt start after a second or too DONT keep trying

Can you hear the fuel pump prime ? (turn ognition on, kill switch off)
Do the clocks reset when you push the starter button or does it make any noises
You may have fouled the plugs/flooded it, if you have been trying a few times. (In which case you may need to pull the plugs to clean them/dry them out)

kill swich is off and yes you can hear the fuel pump prime it cranks over fine just didn't fire up.
my mum's boyfriend is a mechanic and looking at it for me today :)
i live in Fareham.

yes i think i may have flooded it last night hopfully charge the battery up a bit have look at the plugs and it should be ok.
The bloke i brought it off started it in front of me so it shouldn't be a major fault finger crossed

Cool , hope you get it sorted :)

Just DONT touch the throttle when starting , youll shag the sprag clutch and that will cost you a fair bit of pocket money.

Any odd noises?!

A decent RSV will fire up in an instant.

So its cranking over and the fuel pump is priming?

Try jumping it off of a car battery on full fast idle, if it doesnt start in 3 seconds then dont try again, get to diagnostics.

Not putting a curse on you but the Sprag could be failing, it doesnt have to be making a huge noise to be slipping.

If you arent sure what you are doing then make sure you have the help of someone experienced with these sorts of engines, most car tech's will be lost on the Rotax lump

we will be ok colin will be fine working on the engine so far we have found, loose soliend lead, spark plug lead came off in his hand when he went to check the plugs, all the plugs had bigger gaps than they were spose to the air filter was full of crap and the butterflies were black and full of grim and the battery plates were dry.

got new battery getting new plugs today, sorting out the leads and going to get a new air filter, cleaning out the air box and butterfiles
also going to give the oil a change at the weekend.

Have to meet up m8, i am over the hill in Waterlooville :thumbup
Loomies for a cuppa !! :devious

just a quick update.
got new plugs air filter battery cleaned up all the connectors cleaned out the air box and butterflies. put it back together hit the button and started straight away sounds great took it out for a run last night with no problems at all stopped out a couple of mates houes started up fine both times got home and covered it up straight away.
went to start it this morning and it wouldn't start again....
when i first went to start it up i did hear a bang / pop out of the exhaust.

while riding it last night i did get caught out in the rain and noticed when i stopped i did have prblems getting it into neutral it only liked going into neutral while the engine was off...

any suggestoins?

sounds like an electrical fault to me mate, i would spend a bit of time inspecting every connector you can find, look for signs of water ingress(corrosion deposits). Make sure the battery terminals are tight. Don't worry too much about the neutral problem. They are all like that....
Hope this helps
MD

cheers i did do some of them when changing over the spark plugs, i'll have a look at all the ones i can find.
just brought the 150a soleniod to try helping out with this issue going to change them over at the weekend

Hope you find the fault...these bikes can be a bit temperamental BUT once you get them sorted they are cracking!

fast idle seems to be working ok but will give a better check
cheers for all the help loved riding the bike last night just want to make the bike a bit more reliable than it is at the moment lol

Change the oil jet to a 0.40 I got mine from here it helps with gear changes and finding neutral much easier :thumbup ( search for the thread about changing this )

I found it easiest to knock it up into 2nd then gently tap down into neutral :thumbup

took the plugs out last night and they have done less than 20 miles and black already were wet to, tried them off still wouldn't start.
think it maybe over fueling as after a couple of tries you can smell the fuel.
anyone else have a problem with over fueling?

Yep...sounds like it needs looking at - throttle bodies/carbs synchronising etc...Mine was running rich, which was causing minor starting problems.I would suggest taking it to a garage that has Aprilia experience ...Will cost BUT should sort out the problem!
