Hello, hopefully sticking around!

Just picked it up, been riding it for all of 26 miles when the oil light came on at idle at a set of traffic lights. :eek

Took it into the local Aprilia dealers for them to give me a brief assesment. He said if it's only comming on when hot, then it's probably chewed a con-rod & losing oil pressure at the crank.

He said it's unlikely it's the pressure switch & said twins usually have this problem- pointed to a 749 Ducati sat in the workshop with the same problem.

I decided to ride it home the 5 miles, seeing whatever damage has already probably been done. Got maybe halfway & the oil light no longer came on at idle. I got the engine hot to try & replicate it in town, but still can't get it to come on.

Do they usually have problems like this? It's only done 8000miles.

My only issue was the oil looked slightly blacker than I'd like & is 10w40 Semi-Synthetic. Oh, and the tank was slightly over-filled (level at the top of the sight tube).

Can someone help a newbie?! I'd dearly like to keep the bike, and don't want to have to go back to the seller (loose term 'friend') with problems.:thumbup

What a machine though, feels very weird going that quickly, while sat upright! Awesome!!:thumbup

Might just be old oil, change it. If its black and feels thin between your finger and thumb its probably frigged.

Have a look at the Oil filter housing, on the left of the engine just in front of the front sprocket cover.

If it looks like the one on my bike - just under the clutch slave............

Then you have the "upgraded" long oil filter. This filter causes the oil light to come on during hot engine starts, and sometimes at idle if the engine is hot, as it allows the pressure to drop a bit. The "old" filter was shorter and flowed less, but had a bypass valve for over pressure. Rotax decided less pressure at low rev's was better than muck oil at high rev's.

I make no comment (I was going to swap my bike to the short filter, but then a ferkin dealer swapped both of them to the long one, so I sold Tifa the housing) as to which is better, there are pages debating this issue on AF1.

If your filter housing is the older short pattern then treat it to fresh oil and a fresh filter, most likely cure it anyway.

Oh, one more thing, go find a dealer that doesn't talk out of his arse.

put a switch on to be safe they aint dear and we have them in stock usualy rocket centre 01254 297810
they dont like gettin wet sometimes and pley up

Thanks all. The light has gone out & stayed out, although i'm a little worried it'll come back on so going for an oil change in the week.

15w50 the stuff to go for? Or should I be using something else?

Here it is anyway

Anyone got a recommendation for some bar end mirrors?

I just realised, I've got a few more questions!

The Yamahaha starter Relay- what's the benefit of fitting it?
10Ah battery- how long till it dies? There's not a lot of life left in it now- only being kept alive by the optimate!
Is there a headlight wiring mod for cranking the bike over?
Where can I get a tank bag bas for my existing oxford luggage?

That's about it, I think!!

Thanks, in advance

VB03,
The Yam starter relay is probably cheaper but why change if there is nothing wrong with the old one and as for the battery mine is the original that came with the bike , 4 year old and still ok.

Ah, right. i thought it was something to do with it's ability to handle more current?
Good to know there are cheaper alternatives though:cheers

I'd love a twin set-up, but seeing as the missus would probably kill me this side of Christmas, it's on the back-burner!

It already has the Aprilia Optional can, the original is sat in the box along with the chip from the ECU. It's very loud, if anything, I'd like to have a twin stacked outlets, but that's only a small gripe:thumbup

Is there something inherrently wrong with that end can? Or are we talking about the standard one here?

Right I think the can which I had on mine that looked like yours had printed on there for Race Use Only which in the event of an off would invalidate your insurance. Apart from that its ok although does still look like a great big huge canon.

PS why go for a twin outlet. Much more expensive and doesn't sound that different. My exhaust was only £150 from MTC (Max Torque Cans). Looks nice wasn't expensive and got told by someone following me yesterday had a nice raspiness about it. I would highly recommend them and its road legal (passed the MOT even without the baffle in ;)). I did take it but the MOT guy said don't bother putting it in as you'll only take it out when u leave here. See someone that talks sense. Even wanted to buy my bike

Oh right, It has a strip of foil tape (used for Aero stuff) which I'd imagine is cunningly placed over whatever is engraved.

It is quite loud!

Apparently it has an Eprom chip fitted, if I went back to the original end can- which I quite like anyway (stacked outlets), will this fudge up the fuelling? I was told this would be the case if I put the other can back on.

I'll check out the MTC cans, unless anyone wants to do a trade for this one?!

Yep it has that on it to pass the MOT but theoretically you're riding without any insurance fella. Sort it.

what he said.

I put the original exhaust back on and removed the Eprom. Can you guys tell me if I've done it wrong?

The Eprom is sort of like a piggy back job with around 3 layers. I've removed all 3, and plugged the original Yellow Euro C chip directly into the chip board (Lining up the notches). It fires up fine. So assuming its job done?

If I go for another can in the future, will I need to use the Eprom?

Hi mate I've got a racing version. The chip I had looked like the normal one. Never seen an EPROM one but I'm guessing if u get a straight through one it'll have to go back in. Just get a mtc one. U know u want to. Contact them direct. I got a powder coated black exhaust for 150 but they do cheaper stubby ones not powder coated for less ;)
