Hi

Well am going to view/buy a 2000 RSV-R tomorrow afternoon, Am really excited. Havent ridden in 2yrs so will have to take it alittle steady at first.

I just want to know a few questions...

What should i look and listen for when i go and see the bike tomorrow?.

I hear the stock exhaust on the 98-03 models can be derestricted? And the airbox and ECU also. Does this INC the UK 98-03 RSV aswell?.

Thanks.
Luke

Hi mate.....you want to be checking it starts first time on the button with no crunching/clicking or coughing noises. Check it's been kept on an optimate (full charge battery is essential on these big buggers, even in the summer), the noises on start up will be the sprag clutch or solenoid, which are classic probelms...they can be sorted but at a price, apart from that a service history would be good, with regular oil changes. If it's the R with Ohlins suspenders check for weeping fork seals (another common issue) and if it's done more than 9k miles ask if the valve clearance check has been done (should be done at 9k, if not a good bargaining tool to get the price down). The standard exhaust is a missile launcher & needs to be taken off sharpish and replaced with an aftermarket can to release the full V-Twin noise experience. The bike should already be de-restricted (this is a snipping of a wire, usually done by the original dealer). Good aftermarket additions are changed sprockets (17 front down to 15 front and 42 rear up to 44) which make the bike easier to ride round town and more responsive. Additionally an aftermarket airbox can assist - see Hooked on here who does a very good open airbox kit for a reasonable price.......Hope your hunt goes well!

Thanks for the reply.

The bike is an RSV-R, And its done 10k on the clock. Now the dealer doesnt know if it has full history or not but he said it does have history. How hard are the valve clearance to do yourself? I do have a technical background (not massive).

Dunno if its a good deal. Its an 2000 RSV-R with 10k, 12months MOT, 100% standard and very clean condition with history not 100% till tomorrow if its full, Its up for £3000.

Thanks
Luke

seems a bit rich to me but i might be wrong, i paid 2k for a w reg mille last year:dunno

I would say that's a bit high for the year, I paid 3K for a 2003 standard Mille with aftermarket exhaust and 4750 miles on the clock last October.. however.....they are cracking bikes and I would say if they throw in a full service it may be worth it bearing in mind the toys you get with the R: Ohlins suspension, Oz wheels etc... The valve clearances, I dunno I'm not that technically minded but a few guys on here have done it them selves & a load of guys have not bothered. The bikes can do high miles if looked after, the old Rotax lump is a pretty strong engine.

I didnt think that was a bad price. As it is the R with the Ohlins and OZ wheels, And i havent seen them any cheaper. Will see what i can get knocked off tomorrow :D.

Thanks
Luke

Hi and Welcome to CRASH TD's TOP SITE...:thumbup:thumbup

just had a kook at the 03 mille for sale a nice bike but its been adjusted to take higher bars dont know if thats a good thing ??

in september last year i paid £3k for a 2000 rsv-r with 4000 miles on the clock, history, standard and akrapovic exhausts, standard airbox and open filter and matching chip, changed talon sprockets, alarm and optimate. i thought that was a good price for the ability of the bike and the specialness of the parts and caron fibre etc.

i'm just about to do the 9000 mile service myself, will let you know how it goes but will take a while as i'm also fitting a load of new parts and changing the wiring loom.

If your semi technical the valve clearances will be a piece of cake to check, however adjusting them is a job for a pro mate.

Get Griff in to do them correctly and whilst he's there keep him supplied with biscuits and tea and have him fettle the rest of the bike. LOL

Don't worry about how much you pay for the bike, we all paid different prices for ours. I picked up a rare blue one back in July 2008 for just over £2K with 10K on the clock. Love it to bits but I must have spent £500 or more and many hours of my time bringing it up to a descent standard.

Most important of all is have fun and I'm sure you will grin from ear to ear on your first ride out. :doug
