Had a new tyre put on Wednesday:

The T had new Maxxis tyres on when I acquired it, and I have been pleasantly surprised with them.

So when I needed a new rear (front is sound) I thought I would stick with Maxxis but go with their new 'Diamond'. You can make out the new type of edge in the pic above.

Q - I've done about 25 miles v very gingerly on them to date, riding as if on glass after reading so many new tyre mishaps on here!! What's the general opinions on how many miles etc. before I stop pussying about on them? 50 miles or have I already done enough etc.?

With a Maxxis I'd take it easy for about the next 4000 miles :crazy haha !

Only kiddin bud. There is a recent thread here on the site for our aching brothers. I wouldn't be rushing to Tool Mart for a powerfile tho !

I had a fireblade a few years ago, got a new rear tyre fitted.
Promtly fell off within 50 feet.
Never even felt it slide.
I think they used Castrol GTX to fit it instead of washing up liquid (or what ever stuff it is)
Since then I have been very careful with new tyres.

Ta mate, kind of stuff I was after. Powerfile - wtf :eek

Oh, and yes I know some people think Maxxis are budget ****. However some people swear by them and I have read good reviews of the Diamonds so thought I'd give em a try. Especially as the front is hardly bloody worn. The rear only lasted 2.5k though, bit disappointing.

Just ride them carefuly for about 100 miles. They should be scrubbed in enough by then .

You don`t have to go fast to get the bike over. Pick out a few roundabouts and sweeping bends so as to get to the edges .

Nice and easy , don`t push it.

Yeah, agree with most of what has been said on here and in the other forum.Well apart from the petrol and power file bit,.....ffs!Just take it really easy for the first few miles and get some heat into the tyres.Oh,and slowly increase the lean angles.
I saw the Diamonds at the BMF show,...that tread pattern is pretty freaky,....I'd be interested in what they feel like.

At the moment taking it super-easy hence very little leaning going on. Will update this thread after I have built up the lean enough to get to the freaky-deaky edging bit :)

Is the point of the weird edge tread to reduce the oooop's new tyre sphincteral syndrome. It looks like it will be worn smooth in not too many miles but would provide a bit more initial edge grip. :rolleyes

Hmm don't know what it will look like when a bit worn?

However Maxxis blurb:

'Maxxis' ground breaking MA3DS Supermaxx Diamond - sports touring radial - features an eye catching Diamond shoulder tread pattern, incorporating micro pore technology, combined with Maxxis' new 'Ultra' tread compound to deliver outstanding levels of dry traction and increased wet weather grip.'

and from a Review by Visor Down:

'Those weird feathered edges are a great way to get extra edge grip for what is actually a hard compound, high mileage sports touring tyre but they do create a sensation of movement when you're approaching the sorts of angle of lean that sees footrest tips colliding with tarmac.'

This sort of answers your question AE09T :)

I reckon 20 miles to scrub tyres in at the very most , i never do 100 . think how many times a tyre rotates in 20 miles .... loads .

I did about 70 miles riding home after I picked up my bike, with a new rear. No chicken strips left either side by the time I got home.

Just take it easy the first few times you crank it over. :)

Done about 60 on them now, progressively leaning more. All good so far :thumbup

If its warm enough not to wear your thermals your tyres will behave a lot better.

heat , heat , heat is what they need, brake hard in straight lines accelerate hard , then gradually work em in
If the tyre aint bed in after 20 mins of that then take it back and get a new fecker

ah reckon awe this diamond mularkey is jist fancy marketin tae shift mair rubber.....a bit like new an improved dishwasher tablets "wi the Red PowerBall" *****.....

...but then again ah could jist be speakin pish as usual.......
