Hello all, I'm new to the forum and I have read through a ton of helpful posts and excellent mods to increase reliability of these bikes somewhat weak wiring system..
I recently purchased myself a 2002 RSV from a salvage company.. the bike checked out in terms of straightness, it took a low-side at about 15-20 miles.. a small scrap to the slider and scuff on the lower fairing. Mechanically I had it checked out, wasn't anyone i used before because it was an out of town sale, It rode really nice a little shake under heavy break i attributed to heavy grime on the front rotor and probably a bobbin stuck up in it.. I got it for a ok price for the condition, as i can work on the bike so i'm not that worried.. It rode home about 250 miles beautifully.. Started in the morning and rode it for a brief 30 mile loop and stored it for the day.. next morning was a little cold when I came out to ride it to work.. nothing serious, not even frosty and the motor wouldn't catch, a free-spinning sound.. I instantly stopped. Topped off the battery, tried again, clack clack clack.. crap that's the sprag I keep hearing about in all these posts.. I gave it a sec and tried again.. same clack clack clack.. No name brand battery was POS so I bought an 14ah X2 agm one and the next morning it started up like new, I also replaced the stock solenoid to the uprated yamaha one at that time also.. Next morning.. same thing.. clak clack clack.. So i'm pretty sure my sprag is wadded up in there so now i'm getting all my specialty tools together for the job(got the puller and a crank holding allthread) and I have a question.
In the all the write ups there's no mention of the Special cover removal tool, there is mention of it in the v990 shop manual, is this an allignment tool if you remove the stator from the cover or is it necessary to use even if you unplug the stator or prop it up in cover while you do the work? I'm on a budget and hoping to get away with using the KTM sprag in the aprilia housing with gaskset replacements. Is the special cover tool necessary for the job?
Thank you for the helpful forum btw!
