I live in Duns in the Scottish Borders.
Hi - just got my 03 Tuono a week ago. One owner and only 2,400 miles - still on original Dunlops. Or at least it was - rear now done in, and the front (with loads of tread) has picked up a screw - DOH!
I have had all manner of bikes, but this is something else - confidence from the word go - especially on downhill bends, where I usually bottle it.

I am going the usual route of 16 tooth front sprocket/loud can/BMC filter. I got the can and filter off Ebay, and they come with an eprom chip - never seen one of these before - do they make any difference? What do I do with it? Is it best in the oven or fried?
I also understand that there is an airbox fix to get more flow - any advice?

Don't really know why I'm doing all this - the bike goes like sh-t off a shiny shovel anyway.

Tyres - what's the best bet for a balance of grip and longevity? Is the stock 190 ok, or does going for a 180 quicken up the steering?

Thanks in advance for any tips - I'll browse the site now - most of the answers are probably posted already.

I am in the Scottish Borders - the roads here were made for Tuonos - I had a Buell before - nice bike, great handling, but not really fast enough - this certainy is!

Welcome to the zone. The eprom's are susposed to sooth out the fueling and ignition side mine was already fitted so don't know the before and after,it's fitted to the ecu under the seat.there's a couple of airbox routes renegrade or evo.I changed the rear 190/55 to 190/50 but will go back to the 55 series when the time comes.
Enjoy the power/wheelies and the sore face from all the grins the T gives

Hi Borderline, glad you are enjoying your bike! I have an 04 which is standard except for the small er front sprocket and its bonkers. I've now fihured out that to raise the front, all you have to do is open the throttle fast in first, ot accelarate hard in first, then up into second and open the throttle fast. Result, very smooth controllable wheelie! The smaller front sprocket must help with this but like you, I'm planning to do the usual mods to see how much more mental I can make the bike. Will be interested to see how you get on, keep us posted!

Re tyres, I have Michelin 2CT's and they seem to grip very well. I also have a 190 and feel it could do with a 180 to speed up the steering but saying that, I think my brain is now getting used to the 190 and is compesating accordingly.....

I have ever ridden a standard bike that feels as bonkers as this!!

I was lucky enough to have Sean Emmett tweak the suspension my '03 Tuono when I had it and he dropped the front by two or three rings and it dropped into corners better then ever and certainlly sharpened up the steering further but it remained very assured.

Very interesting Streetbike, I've read the same advice in Fast Bikes magazine so might well try it out.

I've ordered a Zero Gravity light tint double bubble from the US, apparently being specially made for me ? so hope it comes soon and works well.

You don't live too far from me. Maybe meet for a coffee sometime over the summer ?

Hi Borderline and welcome to the forum,

I used to live not far from you in Oxton near Lauder and have visited Duns many times as I used to cover that area in my job.

I agree that the Borders roads a perfect for the Tuono, I have left many a sportsbike for dead on the bumpy twisties.........

I now live at the other end of the Borders in Moffat, so if you ever fancy a run along the biking mecca that is the Selkirk to Moffat road, give me a shout and we could meet up and compare notes!
Cheers
Rob

Thanks all - I will try dropping the yolks a bit - I've found most bikes benefit from this - just so long as you don't go too far and end up with a twitchy beast. Selkirk to Moffat - one of my favourites, and then a return via the Beeftub - these Southerners don't know what they're missing - roundabouts seem to be the closest they get to real corners - Magazines have even resorted to listing the best ones??????? Are these the same diesel coated traps we have up here, populated by partially sighted pensioners?

Hi Nige, yeah I see you are in Brighton, we should meet up sometime for a ride. I put my neck out the other day so am off the bike for a bit now, tried to go out on Monday but had to turn back after awhile, bloody annoying. Went to see a Chiropractor tonight so hopefully on the mend now. Will be in touch when I can turn my head again! :banghead

Nige / twotwins, let me know if you guys get together - I'm just down the road from BoxHill, and can be down in Brighton in about 30 - 45 min. Would be good to ride with some other T-owners. Good A/B roads around your area and I'm itchin' to let loose after spending the winter tooling around on wet slippery roads (although I have been practicing my rear wheel steering - soooo much power from low down!)

OK guys, I will organise something for one of the upcoming weekends. I am off to Le Mans tonight on the bike for a weekends debauchery and misbehaviour, as long as P and O are able to keep up their end of the bargain as far as the crossing is concerned !Will post up when I get back early next week.

we have family up around Dumfries but visit using the car as the Mrs. is disabled. . We are envious of bikes passing us up there . There is a road from Dumfries to the M74 , (Lead Mines) and the road down to Lochmaben from Moffat (turn off A76).
We say we need a van so as to bring the bikes up with us :thumbup
I used to visit Music Matters (the shop) down Well Street a lot and always came home with a lot of Moffat Tasties
