Hi folks, I am considering to purchase a 2014 Caponord 1200 with only 16000km on it. Are there anything I should take note of when checking the bike? Thanks in advance

I thought I would drop a few notes to you regarding what to look out for...

1. Make sure it’s got perfect service history... and log books, especially with the 20K shim check.. (if Applic)

2. Lookout for oil leaks... down front of front cylinder and rear of rear cylinder..

3. Check the radiator.. some were prone to pin holes (mine did)... whilst I patched it..eventually had to replace ($900 inch labor)

4. Make sure the active suspension changes modes ... when you change from 1 to 2 riders with engine running the rear shock should move position.

5. 16,000 is Low Kay’s.... there’s usually enough come on the market with bugger all Kay’s.... I bought mine with 14,000KMs .... sold it with 44,00KMs ... 20,000 interval service with shim adjustment will set you back $1250 from SunState at Maroochydore... (in Queensland, Australia)

Bang for buck they are a great bike ... if you want to improve them... I fitted a RapidBike ECU, gets rid of the small power drop at 3000RPM and also gave me a quick shifter (up only)...

Hope this Helps..
cheers Phill

Thanks pal. Collected the bike today from seller and looking like the fuel sensor is having some issue as it is stuck at lowest bar despite a full tank. Next will be the heat issue and perhaps a tuner will work on it. Lastly I was told that it does consume abit of lub oil which really sets me think is there something wrong with it

G'day Wei,

I also owned a 14 model 1200TP from new (I bought it in Feb 2015..... rode it for 39,000kms and traded it on a KTM 1290SDGT in Feb 2017 - horsepower corrupts!).

Excessive oil usage can occur when 100% full synthetic oil is used and the bike isn't ridden aggressively enough. My Capo12 used oil when new, but that reduced by half as it ran in.... then it always used 100cc/1000km...... disappointing.... but livable..... and I used 15w50, others used 10w60 semisynth. After 30k kms I weakened and tried Motul 7100 (a 100% full synth) instead of Motul 5100 semi synth, and the bike immediately started to increase it's oil consumption.

The mechanic at the Aprilia dealership said something about the rings being too hard, and that the factory had changed suppliers three times by the time the Rally version was released....... so if your bike is using over half a litre per 1000kms of oil, you could try having the bores de-glazed and better rings installed. Make sure you park using rhe center stand on level concrete and only check the sight glass in the morning when cold for a consistent reading. The Capo only takes 3.4ltrs with a new oil filter, so don't overfill the engine!

I loved my Capo, but I am glad I didn't keep it any longer than 2years/39k kms....... I didn't have the problems the forum's bitterly complained of, but Aprilia dropped the model due the bad publicity and now it might be an issue finding someone who knows how to work on them or how to keep them running well.

Certainly a lovely bike to ride.... and Aprilia should have developed the bike further (with a better engine) as the adventure sport style is now very popular for touring duties.

PS That fuel sender issue is ethanol fuel related - E-fuel causes the plastic float to swell and stick in it's slide. Aprilia always claimed it had a new float that was compatible with E-fuel.... but I see even more complaints over on the "2014-2017 Caponord 1200 forum" - perhaps if you have a look on that forum you'll find a solution.
