Hi people just saw this advertised on you tube so thought id check this out, im just about to sit module 2 of my bike test so when i pass that im looking for a good sports bike and i keep looking at aprilia rsv mille's, i really like the looks of these bikes but i was wondering if theyre expensive to maintain ie cheap to run and look after? Any help at all would be great thanks....

Welcome mate. Take care on that swerve test!
Milles are pretty easy and not too expensive to maintain - few basic things you need to keep an eye on - mainly to do with keeping the electrical system up to scratch. Do a search on here for terms like 'battery' and 'starter relay' and always use the correct cold starting proceedure (alltogethernow "NO THROTTLE").
Don't want to insult you but a Mille is a powerful old beast for a first bike - you may want to spend a while on something a bit less pokey first. Just my opinion - feel free to ignore it!
Whatever you buy, go and get some more training to find out the things they don't teach you for the test. Your local coppers will run a Bikesafe scheme which is a good place to start.
Good luck with your test.

hi

Hi m8 thanks for the reply yeah rsv mille a bit powerful for beginner but its either one of those, a suzi gsxr 750 or a honda 900rr fireblade, cheap insurance quotes for them already lol just to give me a rough idea what to get, but probably the aprilia rsv mille is winning so far , p.s ive alredy passed module 1 the offroad part just the module 2 part now which is basically just riding about the roads so hopefully i pass that real soon lol

Man If I was doing my "what first bike should I get" I would get a 750, enough power to get you into plenty of trouble, cheap(er) to insure. Now mostly 90's exotica as well (I picked up a 91 ZXR750 J1 for £820.

Good luck and go steady mate......

Hiya Dude,

Welcome to the zone.

Theres 2 svchools of thought on what bike to get after your test.

Do you get a old bag of nails with ***** brakes and suspension, and spend all your time concentrating on what the bike going to do and keeping yourself out of trouble, or get something modern that handles and can get you out of trouble if it starts to get out of control.

I was unlucky enough that the bikes we used to use at work were old dogs, but they taught me alot, plus i still had my own tidy bikes at home for pleasure.

I still reckon some of my accidents i had were cos the dog bikes i had couldn't deal with the situation that had arisen.

If your getting cheap quotes, then i would imagine you have a young head on a older body, so i would say, Go for the aprilia, and change the gearing so its more user friendly around town.

And best of all, good luck with the test and have a greeeaaaaattttt summer riding.....

I just got RSVR yesterday. Been riding for a year and had CBR600f before. Glad I did as i appreciate the mille now and I learnt to ride well in my opinion and safely, always having to follow my faster friends. Im glad I did it as the mille is a serious piece of kit and I feel like I desreve it now after serving my apprentiship.

Whatever you choose all the best

I would strongly suggest getting something a bit slower, even if just for 6 months to get used to riding on the road. I worked my way up to the RSV over a few years and am glad I did, I started on a 125, 500, 600 then RSV.

We are getting about 2-3 bike deaths a week here (aberdeen) and I bet a big part of it is people jumping straight onto fast sports bikes. With a majority of jobs in oil and gas, people have enough money to go straight to their dream bike and it only takes one mistake to end it all! Im sure the apauling standards of cage driving is also a big factor but best to learn to avoid them on something a little less powerful and a bit slower.

Im sure you will probably just go with the bike you want but really just take it easy at first. It does only take one f*%k up or ***** in a car...

Welcolme to the Zone Dude, good luck with your descission. What ever you buy make sure you take it easy out there and build up your skills slowly but surely, maybe get some tuition and maybe do a few track days in the slow group to improve your skills with out any head on traffic and crazy car drivers coming at you.

Same as ridethelight mate go and get some thing not so full on animal mate the rsv is not a good first bike go for a gsxr for 5 mate then get the dady of all bikes(RSV)and you will love it good luck on test and be safe out on them roads:thumbup

The Mille will be easier to ride fast than either of those as it's more tourqey but they are deceptively fast as they don't rev like a four. Can't say I'd recommend any of them as a first bike. Riding fast in safety is something that takes experience and there's no substitute for that. I'd get myself something a bit less intense for a year just to get used to riding. You got to look after yourself for that cheeky little lad in your avatar eh?
Don't worry, you can still hang out here in the meantime:biggrin

Get yourself a cbr600F mate, a great first bike and plenty fast enough especially for a new rider. The cbr's easy to ride and good to learn how to handle a big bike. The RSV's a fcuking animal even for someone with years of experience :biggrin and deceptively fast as someone has already mentioned and WILL catch you out, not what a new rider wants

Just my opinion of course, but you look young so you have plenty of time to work your way up to a bigun :thumbup

Hi and thanks to everyone replying to my messages, i appreciate and respect everyones comments about telling me to be careful etc, its good to see that some people actually care about other people on here lol,

Just a thought, if you really want the RSV, what about getting it restricted for a while :dunno there's a couple of young guns on here with restricted bikes. Your mates would never know and when you feel your ready, de-restrict it :devious

I suppose its an idea plus maybay even cheaper insurance lol, cheerz m8, ive just took a shine for the aprilia rsv

Dont blame you for wanting one fella, you'll cuddle it as much as you do your kid on your avatar :biggrin

I have had gsxr600 and 750 and more but when i got my rsv i had a grining its the best bike i have had its an 03 mod and my mates keep saying when you going to get a new bike but i will not get rid as i love it and they still cant keep up any way so take your time mate you have years to get one
