Neutral fun and games!!!

Good morning everyone. Just joined the rsvzone having checked it out a few times looking for answers whenever a problem with my 2004 RSVR arises.

I know that finding neutral is a bit of a common issue, so I would more often click up into 2nd from 1st gear, then nudge down again into neutral. Recently there has been a development to which any sound advice would be very welcome. Here is my problem: With the bike standing still and the engine running, I cannot get the gear selector lever out of first, it just wont move!!! I can change up through the gears absolutely fine with the bike moving, or the engine switched off! Please help. I have my bike booked in for it's annual service in a couple of weeks (nearly up to 17,000 miles), and would like to be able to go in knowing what needs to be done, or can I fix it myself?

Thanks
Mark

You almost certainly have air in the Master cylinder which you need to bleed out. It is quite common on the earlier brembo radial M/c. I used to do mine every few thousand miles. You just need to crack the bleed nipple a touch with a little pressure on the lever and a few air bubbles will probably pop out. then close the nipple and release the lever and it should be better. Takes a few mins tops.

For better neutral fit a .40 clutch oil jet. Makes it a bit better when cold.

can this clutch oil jet thing be done to the '02 rsvr aswell? i have very similar problems with mine aswell but not to the point where it is stuck in 1st yet.

Dear Spoonz,

Just wanted to say a big "thank you" for your advice. Bleeding the clutch MC worked an absolute treat. Moving the gear selector up and down has never been so easy, and I can find neutral without any problems what so ever. I have found that the when releasing the clutch lever the 'drive' from the gearbox/engine engages much nearer the end of the clutch levers movement than it was before. Unless anyone has any easy suggestions for altering this, maybe I'll leave it until the proper service in a couple of weeks.

Cheers
Mark
