Need new engine for 2000 mille...

Hello trusty RSV buddies, I am in need of a new (second hand but new to me!) engine for my Mille, can anyone help???

Took it down the road after fitting new Ohlins rear shock, power commander and throttle cables, came to junction, dipped the clutch and she stalled. Wouldn't start so I pushed it home (longest half mile I've ever walked!) and called a local bike garage to come and collect and fix her. Figured it was just a stall due to cold engine and wouldn't start due to the battery not being fully charged as the engine was trying to turn over but not managing to fire.

Their findings are that the engine won't actually turn due to something being broken inside!! Fine bits of metal have been found and a ridge on one of the cranks! General consensus is that it would be cheaper to buy and fit a new engine than investigate further only to find it all needs replacing anyway.

So, anyone have a spare engine that'll fit my Mille? 98-03, RSV Mille, (or RSVR/Tuono I think will also fit but waiting to be corrected :) )

I've found a couple on fleabay but hoping to pay less than £500!

Any advise very welcome as am feeling just a little bit pissed off :angry

Excuse the ignorance, I've heard of sprag problems but what is it and what are the symptoms??

When you press the starter you wont hear the engine turning, but it will be heard like some tooths in the engine are skipping, it will sound like someone is hammering your engine very hard :D

Is the starter motor spinning but not engaging the engine ?
These Rotax engines are bomb proof, my money is on a failed sprag clutch.

trying to start it with a duff battery makes me think sprag clutch. I've never had mine go as I have a uprated battery and the bike charges well.

The sprag clutch is basically a one way bearing that engages the starter motor, blow one of these though and it's still not a cheap job if you can't fix it yourself.
Search the forum for 'sprag clutch' or starting problem/noise, it's the bikes weak point.

One from a Haga rep on ebay click me

Supposedly only 5000 miles and £295 buy it now. Finishes in a few hours mind.

Thanks all for your input. :thumbup

Does anyone know if an RSVR 2003 Haga rep engine or a 2003 Edwards engine would fit in my 2000 RSV Mille and if it's just the engine, would the Mille benefit from the higher performance engines. On the Edwards I'd be keeping my original throttle bodies (not sure if the Haga rep has larger ones). Would it be a straight forward drop in or would I need extra bits to make them fit/work.

Apparently it's not the sprag clutch so new engine probably best way forward. At least this way I get a much lower mileage engine (mine has 43K on clock) with hopefully added power :bigsmile

As always, any advise very welcome. Given sunny weather I need it fixed and not in pieces in a garage!!

As far as I know a pre 03 engine (bigger valves) will fit in the 00 chassis as the engine mounting points are the same. Hopefully Cheesy, Legs or Spoonz will be along to confirm this for you and if there are any additional parts needed.

One thing though. The engine could be from a Haga/Edwards signature edition bike, which is the newer shape (some were pre reg in 03 so I understand) and this type of engine won't fit without modification.

Back to the throttle bodies. The engine will run fine on standard 51mm bodies and you'll be using your current ecu and chip anyway :thumbup

98-03 enines will fit fine no issues
if its out of an 03 make sure it has 3 stud exhaust flange as there were some 03 register mk2 milles

98-00 small valve heads
00-02 larger valve heads
03 large valve heads & close ratio box NG stamped at engine numbers

Also be aware
you can fit a falco engine but the gearbox is reversed & you'd need a set of griffs rearsets or gilles to get round this for shift pattern
I have a falco engine in my mille & is strong as an ox, better than my o.e
Think remebering without looking fp/fb stands for falco engine
can double check mine but woun't be till later

Time to come clean, i'm breaking my bike.

The motor is from my 03 mk1 shape edwards, I've tried to answer questions for Jonny but tbh I don't know enough to give him honest answers and I wouldn't like to sell him something that is of no use.

I've read that the edwards motor has uprated rods and being an 03 I knew of the cr box and big valves.

Not trying to dissmis the idea of the haga motor but wasn't that bike an 02 and just a sticker kit.

gaz

your engine be fine

difference between haga engine & your edwards is the close ratio box

Have yo decided on any prices for things as could be interested in couple of bits

I will do matey, I'm not taking anything off it until /if I take the motor out for John as I don't have the space for loads of bits of bike (plus I still have chance to change my mind!). Once the motor is out and i'm left with a rolling chasis I'll start photographing and listing.
