Hi all, i only just registered today but have been reading around on here for a few weeks, great community here :thumbup

Anyways i figured i would ask around here see if there is anyone who really knows their stuff on the newer milles.

My problem is on my 2005 RSVR and its been intermittently bugging me for a long time now... when i put it into diagnostics mode to find out what the warning light means, it gives me the following codes:
48
P80
P99

I asked the local dealer and he doesnt have a clue! :jack
i have researched as much as i can, its not listed in any manuals or anything i have found in almost a years worth of searching..

I am pretty sure i came to the conclusion code 48 is the fan relay, i have checked it over thoroughly, as has the dealer.. apparently its fine, or was when they looked at it.. the other 2 codes, nobody has a clue about :dowhat

Things i do know, it seems to happen more in hot weather, or on the second ride (when the bike is hot/warmed up), it causes the fans to keep running even below the set temperature and is sensitive to movement in the front of the bike, compressing the forks makes a scary clicking sound like its a loose connection somewhere... i was rather worried to go in a petrol station incase it started sparking or something

I have spent many hours pulling my bike apart and investigating every thing i can get at without removing the engine, i have checked every connection associated with the fans and they seem fine to me.

The dealer suggested i could get the fans replaced because it could be a faulty fan, but theres a million other things i could spend £100 on which would be much more enjoyable than checking off something which might be the problem :dunno

The bike seems to run ok, apart from the annoying clicky sounds and not deciding wether to have fans off or on or off or on... but its very annoying as i never know if the EFI and warning lights are showing because of that fault or something serious :confused and its a hassle to put it in diagnostics mode for every ride and try to play spot the codes as they flash on screen.

Any advice or ideas on what can be done to sort it would be much appreciated :biggrin

Regards
Wolf

Not sure about the ones begining with "P", but here are the Diagnostic codes:-

48 relates to the fan relay, as you can see, so you ae correct on that one.

No idea about the ones begining with "P" though.

Welcome fella, you have fault codes stored in the ECU, so any good Aprilia dealer will know via Axone diagnostics what the fault is and replace accordingly. Your dealer either hasn't got the correct equipment or is ignorant in it's correct use. Sounds like a faulty fan switch sensor. RSV Ecosse has listed above the fault codes. Where are you based ?

Also, there was a guy posted HERE about diag codes begining with the letter P, and he got no response either. :dunno

Looks like a strange one!!!

Thanks for the quick replies, interesting to see nobody replied to the other guy with "P" codes :confused

I suppose i will have to look for replacement parts then, ebay beware!

The dealer did hook up the bike to the axone and said it found nothing so :dunno

i guess will just have to put up with not knowing for now, kinda frustrating, but at least i can still ride :biggrin

on another note, just went for first proper test ride since fitting a custom airbox, badger's box style and the front lifted on power in 4th gear with not even full throttle :nana less noisy than i was expecting, which i suppose is good though i made sure i could refit the airbox lid just incase you know who has a go at me! :roost time to get back out there :doug

oh and i'm in Norfolk right near Norwich :thumbup

how do you put it in diagnostic mode, my bike has an error and i need to identify it

Take the seat off and you will see two loose wires near the right hand side panel. Connect these and turn the ignition on :thumbup

Can't you rig up something with 2 bits of wire to put it in diagnostics?

Read it somewhere i am sure.

can someone help please lol
come on - this must be a known subject to the old aprilia heads

From 2004 there is no diagnostic plug. Just a plug for the Axone.

Error codes can be displayed by holding the lap button whilst turning on the ignition and holding it for 15- 20 secs. It will only show current errors though not stored codes.

P before the number means it's a code sent to the Ecu which is not recognised by it's diagnostics.

The clicking sounds like your fan relay is being energised for some reason. It could be sticking or have a dodgy connection. I would swap it with the headlight relay as it's the same just to eliminate it.

mine isnt clicking, mine starts and idles fine, then as soon as you rev it, the red triangle and efi come on
any ideas or is it a dealer job?

its just as spoonz said for the 2004 onwards models, it can be a bit of a **** to get right sometimes i find but patience usually wins :)

another thing to note is that diagnostic code table kindly posted by rsv_ecosse is only for the 2004 onwards bikes, the older ones have a different table which can probably be found somewhere around here...

spoonz, you said the P codes are unrecognised what is supposed to be done about them? the local dealer was as clueless as me on the matter and said they called aprilia and didnt get any more info on what they meant, they did plug it in to the axone but im guessing they didnt get anything helpful from it... so is it just a fix the known issues and hope the other codes go away?

agreat1, i have heard of such a problem before but cant remember exactly what it was, have you been messing with connectors? did you check none of the fuses are blown?

They are spurious codes usually. They can be generated by intermittent connections etc which might produce spikes interpreted by the Can line as an error.
Odds on if you solve the fan issue you solve the codes as well.

A great1 not sure on year of your bike.

If it's 04 on check tip over switch and also see if the fault goes away on a full tank assuming you can hear the fuel pump prime ok.
To pull a code you need to attempt to start in diag mode . If you turn off the ignition after a fault appears to put in diag mode the code is lost unless you have an axone to scan the memory.

Pre 04 check tilt switch again and Air sensor and connections in left air duct especially if it got a recent drenching or jetwash.
