Hi All,

I have a 2002 RSV, i rode it a month or so ago and all was well, The problem is I went to start it the other day and it wouldnt start. Clocks went to Kmh and rev counter went to 6000 rpm. I was told I needed new battery. New battery is now fitted but still will not start and rev counter stopping at 6000 rpm. I have checked the battery and its reading 12-13 volts. Has anyone any ideas please.

First off make sure the battery is fully charged
Then apply about 1/2 to 3/4 fast idle/choke with no throttle at all and it should fire up try it a couple of times if I don't go then leave it for 15-20 mins as you will have flooded it
As for the clock and rev counter the reset when the battery is flat easy to change back
The rev limit does not change you can set a limit for the light to come on
Don't try to start a Mille on a flat ish battery or you could damage the sprag and if it goes it can cost up to 600 quid as It can smash the side casing as soon as the battery start to slow up stop and recharge

I'd had mine on the optimate for 2 days but same as you the bike would not start , so dont hold your breath mate . Its just down to the colder temperatures we are having and unfortunately to get mine going it was the no choke throttle wide open angle but as I always say not to be done for to long . Mines got a new battery which still shows the drain when trying to start these bikes .

Yep started mine yesterday had the battery in the house for a week fully charged and it did have a job I to did the throttle wide open to start it but I don't tell others to do cause if it goes wrong I don't want the blame lol

My battery is fully charged, green lights all the way on my optimate. Just tried to start it, It stinks of fuel but still wont fire. My first RSV. had jap 4 before with no probs. Still love the RSV.

Sounds like mine it stunk of fuel left it for abit then did the no choke full throttle and it went

You guys sound like you've flooded it, I had this problem soon after getting mine.

I found, take off the front seat and the right hand cover, and you'll see the 'fuel pump' connector. Unplug it and crank it over a few times, plug it back in, and hopefully it will start. If not, give it full throttle as you crank, you may need to turn it over for a good few seconds, took about 10 seconds for mine until it roared into life!

Hi thanks all for help. Starteds this morning thankfully, Car battery flat this morn, Bloody interior light left on. Typical. full throttle trick worked.

Thats the only way it works on mine , done it often enough . Why theres no choke baffles me.

No choke guys? Mine starts best with full choke and NO throttle. Battery is uprated one and on optimate whenever I'm not using it.

NO choke as it is fuel injection, all it does is give it a bit of throttle, saves you turning it with your hand.

If you buy a good battery and an uprated solenoid you will eliminate all these starting issues, a YTZ14s-bs is what i recommend and keep it good, once your battery starts to show signs of being weak chuck it out and do yourself a favour buy a new one.

If you keep starting them like the way you are doing you will finish up with bigger more expensive problems, so a good battery and uprated starter solenoid is a must.

Also check stuff like the starter lead cable is making excellent connection & is clean as with the earth lead onto the rear cylinder & the two cables attached the starer solenoid , this will help the starting process heaps .....

Spoke to the local ape dealer about starting problems and said most certainly get a good bs14 battery but as for the uprated solenoid , the opinion seem that there is not much connection with the starting procedure . The other thing he did mention was checking the tps etc . You shouldn't have to use the throttle at all just the fast Idle lever . I found when the temp is above 0 then I can start the bike as you should do and its also in a garage now which helps.
