You should have had a little plastic tag that originally came with the keys From Aprilia which is a code for a recut key.

If you have no other key to copy and no code your in trouble.

Phone Aprilia and give them your VIN number and they might be able to send you a replacement from that, if it is the origonal ignition.
You could ring around some locksmiths and ask them if they can make a key if you send the ignition lock to them.

Also if your bike is the newer shape 04> RSVR then your key is coded to the standard fit immobilizer i believe.

I went to get a key cut for my car the othe rday, and the key shop slipped my keyinto a machine and announced its got random encryption, which means it resets to a different number everytime its used, and so i would have to get one from my main dealer.

Is the aprilia one also random encrytion, or is there a way to disable the immobiliser, as taking the seat lock mech off and to a locksmith should mean they can make you a key quite easily. I had a locksmith do me one for a £10 but that was about 10 years ago.

well, I got the spare key from the previous owner, but no tag with a number. At least I can ride again. Isn't there a chip in the key for the security system? And wouldn't this keep me from just getting another key cut? Thanx for all of your help guys - now if I could just get the rear brake to keep up - seems that every time I have it blead it only lasts a week or so and then it's back to nothing again - even had the recall performed on it - must have a leak in the line or something - but where to look to find it?

what is the immobiliser?

As legs said if the bike is post 04 the key is coded to a Zadi immobiliser.

It's not a random code though and you can get keys cut elsewhere from a blank you get from your dealer. The delaer can also match it to your immobilisor if they have the red master program key which puts the system into learn mode.

That key code is important if you can get the tag. When i traded my Rsv in for a Ducati the dealer told me they will not take a Ducati and some Aprilia's unless that code tag is present as a trade in.
