more problems

The speedo works now, it was just the typical "piece of **** sensor has packed in" scenario. Fixing the tachometer and other electrical problems can wait now though as a more serious problem has come up...

The oil pressure light stays on the whole time, was hoping it was just another electrical prob but...I noticed the oil level was low, infact out of sight, even after running it, holding it level etc. Emptied oil tank and engine, thinking there would be low oil but there was actually 3L+ that came out in total, really filthy oil, probably never been changed. The magnetic engine plug had some reasonably sized metal filings aswell which I'm guessing is bad though they weren't coloured. Put new oil filter in it, made sure strainer in the oil tank was clear and put 3.5 litres of fresh stuff in it. Took it for a 5 minute spin, bloody hell these thing are fast. :pirate

Checked oil level when i got back and still no sign of any oil in the window at all, oil pressure light still on. Is there anything else it could be apart from the oil pump? Couldn't say whether it is overheating as the display would still flash cold if I set the ******* thing on fire. Is sorting the pump a big job and what should I be looking for? I'm only mildly ******** at DIY so will have a stab at whatever you guys suggest.

Does anyone else think they look good without the lower fairings on? Kind of like a tuono au naturel.

cheers

If your old oil was manky perhaps your level tube is gunged up too. I'd take that off and clean it out. Not sure about the pump mate but someone will be along to assist who know's what they're on about :biggrin

cheers Sprocker, but no definitely not that, tube filled up nicely when I initially filled the oil tank before it got circulated, something's not working

cheers

it's now got 4 litres in it. do you think putting more in will fix it?!?!

If you've put 3.5 - 4 litres of oil in it and your oil LED hasn't gone out, you've ridden it for 5 minutes down the road and the engine isn't knocking it's bollocks off, I think we can safely say that the oil pressure switch is fooked.

well if the oil level isnt showing then its worth trying... i was suprised how much mine took.

Just to add to my previous post, before you buy a new oil pressure switch then pull the wire off and make sure the oil warning lamp goes off.

If it still stays on after disconnecting the sensor wire then you have a dash problem.

Unlikely but worth mentioning anyhow.

Let us know what you find.

it goes out if i disconnect the switch so it's not the dash. I guess it could be the switch then, I just didn't think it could be possible to have added 4 litres to what was probably already in there and not even register on the window...thought the pump must be fooked. Only going 5 minutes down the road without the pump working wouldn't make the engine knock would it?-the oil would still be in there, just not circulating properly. The display only reads cold (another problem) so it's hard to tell if it's heating up too fast

If you had no oil pressure the engine would knock almost as soon as you started it.

Running an engine for 5 minutes without oil pressure would have destroyed it, trust me!!

Your engine would be a pig to start as it would more than likely be seized solid.

shows what i know about engines then:dunno

any suggestions to my next step? I still think 4 litres of oil should be enough, so other ideas welcome

Normally I'd say get a new switch without hesitation but I'm concerned that you other dash issues may be the symptoms of a larger problem.

No tacho, and what other issues have you got with the dash?

You are checking the oil level correctly i guess. It must be checked after a good ride out immediately after the engine is sitched off. 2/3 rds the way up the sight tube

low petrol light always on, tacho not working, always reads cold etc, speedo wasn't working, now rectified, tip-over switch was missing- I bought a good un!

Yep, that's how I read the oil level Legs, only rather than being 2/3 rds of the way up, there was no sign of it on the sight tube, even though I've put the whole 4L can in. Definitely not a problem with sight tube.

try adding another 1/4 of a litre or so, you may just start to see oil in the sight tube

did you dig out that receipt and ring the company up about that bill for the electricall faults rectified to find out the issues

also run of the mill most take 3.7l of oil,
mine also once wouldn't register on the site tube, can't remember what it was down to, blocked, air lock
but don't fill anymore
i would possibly redrain & refill it and go from there

If you've put 4L of oil in the bike and it's not registering then you have an issue with the bike.

Make sure the level tube isn't blocked, actually remove it and check it's not physically blocked.

If that OK then you may have a scavenge pump issue.

You did you say you had cleaned all the filters etc... was there much crap in there?

Hey Cheesy, yep called the people who worked on the bike but they didn't keep records back as far as 12 months so were no help.

Haven't put any more oil in yet but only bought 4 litres anyway, thought that would do it!
I'l try draining and refilling but I think there's definitely a problem.

Cheers for all the input amb, I'm sure it's not the sight tube though, it filled up nicely when I initially put the oil in, it just disappeared never to be seen again once the bugger was started.

The oil was the dirtiest I've seen but there was no crap on the oil tank strainer or filter, only suggestion of a problem was a few metal filings on the magnetic drain bolt.

If the pump's gone is it a big job to fix?

It's not a major job to get the pump out but it is beyond most home mechanics capabilities.

I would advise to have someone check it out before you start tearing in to the engine, removing pumps etc...

Glad I've been of help so far but please don't start stripping the engine apart before you've had a professional look at it.

there's an aprilia service centre in Peterborough where I could get an oil pressure check done but some of these places charge the earth just to cast their eye over it
