Welcome to the wonderfull world of Italian motorcycles!
In the bad old day, Ducati's were poorly made and reliability shocking.Take my 1990 900SS fer instance. No grease on the rear spindle from new,...so when I tried to remove the wheel for a new tyre, the spindle was seized in the swingarm.Big hammer and heat gun to get it out.Died on me one night when the battery terminal fell off.Fairing never went on the same way it came off.Re-fitting involved a lot of pushing and pulling to get the fixings in.Fairing was held together with wellnuts that would seize regulary.
My 851,...Big end failure, rear brake pads fell out.Rust in the tank blocked the fuel filter, then the regulator burnt out,.....and dont talk to me about 916 regulators,....3 units in 1500 miles!
Mrs KB owned a new Laverda Diamante,...beautiful bike but, headlight mounting was crap.In the dark, all you could see from the lights was the inside of the fairing. All the relays were mounted on a thin plate under the seat,.....on a bumpy road they would shake out of the holder, causing the bike to stop.
Ducati 900 Monster,...main relays under tank fail so the bike wont start,Its happened a couple of times,so we keep a couple of spares under the seat.
999,..week batteries, cracked rear exhaust flange and broken rear subframe.
These are just a few problems I have suffered, others have had burnt out alternator wiring, valve gear rockers failing,(£100 a pop!)side stand and oil light switches failing.
So its not just 'Prilla's that have probs.Big 'ol Vee twins vibrate like buggery which loosens bolts and causes bits to fall off.It also creates havoc to delicate electronic components.Every time I clean the bike,I have a bit of a poke about and check that nothing has fallen off/come loose.Plus check chain tension, fluid levels, etc.
