missing 2 bolts from my rear sprocket holder..

hi guys,

i dont post much but would appreciate you input into this.. i have just paid 420 for a full service 18000 miles..when the bike returned i notice that the rear is missing 1 bolt and one is well loose..these bolts hold studs which hold the sprocket in place as far as i can see, and can only be accessed with the wheel off..
question 1, how could i loose one bolt and the screw if the crew is attached on the other side to a stud..
question2 would they remove my wheel to service, then forget to replace one stud?? and left the other loose??
can i buy these studs anywhere??

at present im not riding it as im sure its not safe with only 3 of 5 studs..

cheers nick

thanks for reply,
trouble is it took me hours to get there as, i wanted to use a approved aprilia service center.. i live in brighton.. no aprilia near me.. should have gone southern cross..

im now trying to source new studs - so i can have my usual mechanic fit them..

they are tricky to get to as well. You have to take your sprocket carrier off the wheel to get to the back nuts. Mine came loose but managed to spot it in time. I check them quite a lot now though!

yeah,
ive just mailed the dealer that done the work.. apparently according to aprilia.me, they are impossible to just fallout and loose, he says wheel must have been removed to take out the stud.. he also says they are expensive to buy new, as not standard sizes..
great news..

Also the nut on the end of the stud is a locking nut, so it would take alot to just come off. I think the dealer has changed the wheel bearings or cush rubbers and lost the pins, so that would explain why its missing

use griff from aprilia performance. he'll come to you to service your bike and he's **** hot on aprilias.
he mentioned to me to regularly check these bolts as they do come loose:eek:

thing is they are locking nuts but only the first time they're used. Then they are just quite tight nuts! Think the torque is about 50nm?

As the others have said it's impossible to lose the studs without removing the wheel and the sprocket carrier. Service manual states that the lock nuts should be replaced after being used a maximum of three times. List price of new studs is around £6.60 each and lock nuts £1 each so with delivery you are looking at about £40. Less of course if the dealer who 'serviced' the bike coughs up.

thanks all.... apparently the place that serviced it didnt touch the back wheel.. so i have managed to loose one stud and bolt somehow.. im off to order me some expensive studs and bolts.. .. thanks all again for your input.. nick

Something strange going on here, assuming they didn't remove the back wheel I can see the nuts could spin off but surely the studs would still be there (could they be loose inside? ).

On the other hand if they are telling the truth then it's a piss poor techy that would overlook 2 nuts & studs missing from the rear sprocket.

Seems to me they are saying either way that their servicing standards fall way short of what you should expect.

In that case I would double check all their supposed 'work' and never go to them again.

Both my bikes Suzuki SV 1000s & the Mille are brands franchised from the same local dealer, after having them screw up work on the Suz while under warranty there is no way I would let them get anywhere near any bike of mine again.

THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY INCOMPETENT!!

And the scary thing is.....................they are now selling the RSV4.

I pity anyone that buys from them

well thankfully, ive located spares at 'speedaway' whos number i was passed from southern cross.. ive ordered all new rubbers, all new locking nuts, and studs..

but yes does seem strange, an aprilia service center missing loose nuts on the rear hub...it wasnt a cheap service either...needless to say they've lost all my future business...

im now ordering a rear paddock stand also, to do the fitting myself..

cheers nick

i would recommend an abba stand rather than a paddock stand...looks to be a group buy on at the moment as well.

i had my rear tyre replace a couple of thou ago and a couple of the studs were loose. i tightened them of course. now i am in the middle of changing chain and sprockets and have removed the wheel and all of them are loose. i don't know if they are wearing loose on the aluminium talon rear sprocket or what, but i shall be putting new locknuts on this time for sure and using a different sprocket anyway.

I had this on mine last week, cleaning the bike and found one of them loose, so took the backwheel off and got the assembly off, but the stud was just spinning whenever i tried to get the nut off. I ended up hacksawing down nut, alongside the side of the stud. Once it was off, i discovered that the thread had been stripped, probably by someone previously overtightening the stud/nut. check all the others and they are fine, so got a new stud and nut, and fitted my 43 tooth sprocket whilst it was all in bits.

Good as gold now :biggrin

Haines recommed you locktite the nuts on , which is what Ive done. Cant see how you could loose a stud though. Unless the missing stud has actually snapped off and the base is still in the carrier.

one of mine sheared off whilst tightening it last nigh. i have the mot booked for tomorrow morning, so no chance to get a new one before then. i have been a bit naughty and just araldited the 2 bits together hoping that they'll visually fool the tester and then i'll replace it as soon as the one i've ordered turns up (the ride to the mot place and back will be all that i do with it like that probably, although 4 out of 5 should be plenty)

LOL Araldite. :dowhat

Get the genuine Aprilia studs but buy some 10mm stainless steel nylock nuts off Ebay, I paid around £3.00 for 10.

well, it worked. just passed the mot for another year. was worried that the akrapovic can didn't carry an e-mark anywhere, but neither does it say 'not for road use' either. but thought that and the renegade air filter would be too loud. HID dipped beam headlight also passed.
