I've posted previously about the starting problems I've had with my mille. Things have taken a turn for the worse.

My bike now makes horrible noises when trying to start, I'm guessing its the sprag clutch.

Its going in to be collected on the 23rd which is the earliest opportunity the garage has so I'm off the road for at least a fortnight.

I've asked them to check the fuelling out aswell.

I've been told if it is the sprag I'm looking at £300 but to be honest I'm not bothered I just want the fooker working!

Hopefully I'll be back soon with better news!

Sorry to hear that , my old engine was doing the same, it is the sprag clutch, i'm having some starting difficulties only when its below 5C and the bloody dash keeps reseting when i'm trying to start it hot althogh i have a new battery. Today it cut out on me, so i think my sidestand switch is on its way out... good old tialian electrics..

WTF is a sprag clutch and what does it do :dunno

I seen you guys mention it loads in forums and am non the wiser

There are a few threads explaining it. I suggest you to read them to avoid ******* it up (forgive my French). :thumbup

Makes horrible noises and costs lots of money.

Constantly trying to start the bike when the battery is on its way out results in sprag syndrome ... like bob says itll cost a lot of pennies after its made its crunchy sprag noise... keep your battery topped up and if it dont start first time avoid turning over the engine repeatedly .

Hope you get back on the road soon fella :thumbup

i think the only way to sort out all of the starting problems out is to rip whatever alarm system you have on your bike out i did it to mine after years of problems about 7 battries and 1 sprag clutch and have never had a problem since starts first time every time. the bike was always kept on an optimate before and after i ripped the alarm out it seems to me the only way to truly sort out this problem just spent more money on garage security

My bike has a pretty expensive datatool alarm thingy, cheers RSV1000punk you confirmed what I already suspected. Think I might ask the garage to rip it out, whats the point of a bike alarm anyway? had a few on previous bikes and the only person who set them off was me! waste of time time in my opinion, a good lock/chain is a better bet.

Also to be fair I was very carefull to only start my bike when the battery was good after looking through this site. Think my sprag was on its way when I got the bike, still you live and learn.

Cant wait to hear that V twin thump on the open road again!

Before ripping it out, check your insurers don't insist on an alarm

Fair point, I did declare it............... maybe a subtle disconnection is in order!

Don't despair, when my bike wasn't starting it made a horrible noise and I convinced myself it was the sprag clutch but when I stuck a new gel battery in it it was fine.

Cheers for the support but my battery is brand new and I even used a jump start pack last attempt, still think its the sprag. Fingers crossed its nowt worse......

Bummer, it does sound like the sprag then. I hope it gets sorted easily.

I know this is a late entry (just got back from Gateshead!!!) I've recently had a sprag clutch fitted (see 'AAaaargh how much'), but the actual cost is about £79 plus the labour, not the hundreds that have been quoted on this fair forum....please bear in mind!!! All the best and 'Up the Toon'
