I,m on the verge of buying a new welder as my old mig has died ( probably of old age ) .

i dont know whether to replace as a like for like basis or go for a tig / inverter . most of what i weld is car body panels , chassis repairs , motorcycle related bracketry etc .

i have previously had ally welding done by a mate of a mate . if i buy a tig this is summat i can have a go at myself .

i,m not a regular use welder and would like a machine thats easy to use , so i,m erring towards the mig gas/non gas .

any reccomendations from the welders out there . got my eye on a clarke mig 145 gas / no gas or a clarke at100 85 amp tig invertor.:dunno

Personally, I would go for a gas mig, especially for what you use it for. The Clarke ones are good value.

I used to do a lot of stainless tig welding for a milk processing plant. It gives a clean neat weld, is fairly easy to self learn, but for general car body repairs , IMHO the mig is a far better choice.

Mig all day long mucker. If you go for the tig invertor you'll be limited to the thickness of ally that you can weld with a 100/85 amp machine.

I just looked at the Clark machine and it's a DC unit so it'll not weld aluminium. You'd need to by an AC/DC invertor at a much higher cost.

Phat cat and Aldo , thanks for the responses . ive ordered a Clarke mig , making use of the vat free offer that runs out today .

had more or less decided on the mig as its what I,m used to . but had to consider the alternatives .

thanks lads :thumbup
