metal residue??????

J

Jacques_nasi

Changed oil and plugs on my bike yestreday, and the manual says :

"remove the metal residues from drain plug magnet".

I found some metal shavings on the drain plug magnet and was wondering if this is normal?? Just how much metal residue is acceptable to have in the oil?:dunno:confused

took a picture of what it looks like but I don"t know how to attach it to the post

in an 02 mate, should be none, or maybe a few very fine almost silver paste at the plug..any large pieces means something is wearing badly..did you take the strainer from the oil tank and chk this also?? might be an idea mate.
upload pic to your photo album, you can then put it in a post calling it from that address eg http:// xxxxxx

I changed the oil on mine last week. Had a tiny bit on the sump plug but the strainer was absolutely clean.

Thanx Aus, Uploaded the picture to my album, Still can't put it in this post
(Dumb ***):jack, so have a look in my album

Shall do matey...in the How to Forum, there is the run down on inserting a picture into your post using the image insert address button

Hmm, well its not that bad looking at the photo, when you rub this between your fingers, how much solids is there...looks like just some hardening splinters

Most if it was quite pasty. with only one piece feeling somewhat "solid".

I've done the oil and plugs myself, But the Mille is going in for valve check on Wednesday, So hopefully theyll be able to detect any abnormalities if there is any!!!

no problem then if most pastey, you will get the odd sliver now and again.. not unusual.

The colour of the metal shavings is very important.

Watch it closely for a while and if you see any copper coloured particles stop riding immediately.

The odd bit of general metal is not uncommon from the gearbox

What does it mean if it's copper coloured spoonz :dunno

The shell bearings are white metal on copper. If you have copper in the oil the white metal has all but worn away.

To continue riding when that has happened spells impending doom.

Thanx spoonz,

I don't believe that I saw any copper residue in the shavings, everything looked silver!

silver or greyish is good..Spoonz made a very good point that i failed to put in my first post, apologies!
Glad no copper particle is present mate :thumbup

Be bit surprised if copper particles found on magnet as copper is non ferrous (not attracted to a magnet) Also i found small amount of metal 'paste' + some fine metal particles on oil plug magnet, i assumed it was from gearbox or sprag clutch, sorry to mention that word (sprag!)

The copper will be in your oil and any particles still with white metal on will stick to the magnet.
