Meta 357 Alarm RIP

A

amb67

Recently I have had the bike do what I can only describe as a hiccup whilst riding. It has on a few occasions caused me to come to a grinding halt at the side of the road but quickly restarted and on my way I went.

Well today it completely ground to a halt and failed to start again, luckily I was only on my patio so I was able to diagnose it fairly quickly and without much fuss.

First off I found that the inline 10A fuse for the alarm 12V+ feed was severely corroded and set about cleaning it up. Regrettably this was only the tip of the iceberg, the corrosion had caused pretty much all of the alarm wiring to become blackened and brittle, with the main unit connector looking very corroded indeed.

Only one option remained and that was to remove the troublesome unit completely. It took me around 15 minutes to completely remove the alarm unit and all the wiring. I have to say it had been fitted very badly and a thief could have disabled and removed the alarm unit in minutes, as I did.

The soldering was of a very poor standard and some connections where barely secured, very poor indeed. The making good after the alarm fitter had broken in to the main loom was virtually non existent and this had allowed water to enter the main wiring loom.

All in all my bike is bound to be much better off without the damn alarm, the electrics/looms have had around 2 hours of TLC from myself and looks as new if not better.

If any of you have a Meta 357 or 357 V2 alarm fitted then check your fuses now, or pay the price as I did. It's usually only a few inches away from the battery.

I will be replacing my alarm unit very soon, anyone got any recommendations?

If the alarm fitter is a bodger, the alarm and ya bike dont stand a chance

That's the alarm I have. And strangely enough while I was riding the other day my bike came to a halt at the side of the road. I put it down to a faulty side stand switch. Now my alarm is about a year old, and most of the time the bike has been off the road, so I would expect the wiring to have no corrosion. However this seems like too much of a co-incidence to me.

Ive got the same alarm mate, are you saying to check the fuses are in good condition?

Mark, don't read too much in to this mate.

It all stemmed from the way the alarm had been installed, badly!!!!

Just check that your wiring loom is not all exposed and any electrical connectors/terminal blocks and inline fuses are not collecting water.

PS. I have found a wicked 2 way page alarm on Ebay. :inlove

Cheers mate, im confident mines all good i had my alarm serviced last month, yes!! SERVICED! Only because i thought there was a problem, went to a specialist and they went through it with a fine tooth comb, turns out there was a problem but the unit reset itself. :thumbup

LOL Mines reset now!!! :doug

It's in the bin, best place for it too.

Had many years of strife from Meta alarms, almost all TVR's came with them fitted as standard.

Had a Meta fitted to my previous RSVR. Used it for 2 years with no probs. Got a Datatool S4 fitted to present bike, been in use for 14 months with no probs. Am I just lucky?

Yeah... get a good disc lock instead :biggrin no-one takes any notice of alarms these days :roll disc locks don't flatten your battery or cause problems such as you just had.

Which is where any alarm on a motorcycle should go on the first day you buy it.
I can't believe you're going to inflict another one of the crappy things on your Italian electrics.
The only things alarms do is piss people off - I remember spending several hours in a van with a serious hangover carrying a Yamaha which bleeped every 30 seconds to let us know it was in maintenance mode and drove me fecking beserk.
Forget any derisory discount you get on your insurance for fitting one - they simply are not worth it.

Unfortunately I think you're right. When ever I've seen anyone by a car with the alarm going off and cursing it I never go over and say " excuse me, can you prove this is your vehicle? "

Guess you just think " Bloody noisy T**t !

I've got the Meta alarm on the Sv and never bothered having it serviced as the main dealer ( Suzuki & Aprilia ) is a total waste of space. Never given me a moments trouble tho'

Just a royal PITA when you stop the engine and it automatically arms the immobiliser after a 30 secs delay.

Does generally help with the insurance though I think, at least they always ask if one is fitted.

I think I'm gonna go for a silent two way pager rather than an alarm.

Would be nice to catch these thieving scrotes and feed them to the dogs!! (Or kids LOL)

Anyone seen these before?:

They look pretty good Alan and not a bad price either.

I remember a few years ago on a ride out to Hunstanton a guy had a GSXR 600 modded to the max, i was looking at it and all of a sudden the bike fired up, first time id ever seem a remote starting bike and was amazed.

He was watching me from about 30ft away eating an ice cream, lol.

Just has an email back from the sales team, 5 weeks before they have any Aprilia ones in stock.

Hmmm! 5 weeks to squirrel away some money from the missus!! LOL
