Magnetic plug removal

Hello all. My Allen keys are obviously tougher than my magnetic drain plug as I've managed to round off the inner.
Is there a solution to get it out that's better than mole grips?
Thanks

Tread carefully Daz - you are in potentially expensive territory! With fasteners that are torqued up against a sealing washer, it is better to use a sharp 'whack' undoing action(rattle gun if you can) than a slow twisting force - which (as you have discovered) can round off the cheese . . . Best of luck . .

Cheers Andreas, much appreciated. I'm not going to go too mad, if I can't get it out i will leave it in.
Sounds like a good excuse to buy a new tool though, I haven't got an impact gun.

The feckin thing is wedged tight. Was thinking of drilling a small recess then tapping round with a hole punch. Any other suggestions before i break something??

How did you get on? Any luck?

Did you try the torx bit... With an impact driver?

I wouldn't use a hole punch, too sharp. Use a blunt instrument like a screw driver if possible.

If not, try heating plug with a paint striper heat gun or small blow lamp, then giving the plug a whack.

Worth adding WD40 first and letting it soak onto the threads.

If all else fails, you could weld a bolt onto the plug, and get a socket onto it. But you might need to repaint.

Hey Paul. I've only tried the torx bit but by hand as I don't have an impact driver. I'm going to get one though. I was trying to get hold of a replacement plug first but it fell through so I've put it on the back burner as my bike has now been put to bed for the winter. I'm riding my XT at the moment but it's getting colder V fast so that will be put away soon and will free me up to do some maintenance on the Rsvr. I think youre right about the hole punch, way too aggressive. I'll post my progress.

I rounded mine out a week ago after changing oil in it for the first time. It was very tight. I took a visegrip, clamped it on and it came right off. I'd try that first. Af1 has a couple options to replace it that are superior to the oem part.

Ah great stuff glad you sorted it. Once I've got a replacement I won't worry so much about destroying the rounded one.

Just in the middle of servicing mine and the plug came out with an allen key ok but when I checked close up it's actually a Torx T40.
