Magnetic Drain Plug and a stem seal question

P

HMMMM.

I have a very slight oil leak after changing my oil (first time I've done it on this bike). I managed to get the bottom drain plug back right first time, and the extended filter cover right on the second attempt (didn't tighten it enough the first time as I didn't want to break it! ) but I still have a slight leak from the magnetic plug. Whilst it was at the garage getting the fork seal looked at I asked them to sort it. They said they replaced the copper washer and retightened it. On the parts diagram I was looking at this plug doesn't have a copper washer. Could that be whats causing the leak? Should I remove the copper washer? It's starting to annoy me as I'm pretty sure I didn't overtighten it but I've done it as tight as I'm comfortable with now, it's slightly tighter than the rec'd torque setting!!Not really sure what else to do with it.

Also, the garage did the valve clearances soon after I got the bike. None needed replacing but they pointed out that the stem seals were a bit leaky and recommended that they'd be fine for now so not to bother changing them. Question is how much more work would it really have been to just do the stem seals whilst they were in there?

Valve Stem seals require the heads to be taken off , valve gear removed , valves relapped , new seals then heads back on .

I would imagine it would be an engine out job and as such would only want one person doing that and he's in Tamworth.

There should be no washer behind the drain plug, as long as its done up to the correct torque settings it should'nt leak.

thanks. So if i take the copper washer out that may well stop the leak. Should be able to snip it so shouldn't even lose too much oil. Dunno how the washer got there though! Only the garage could have put it on. Griff sent me a copper washer with the oil filter for the bottom plug but i didn't bother to change it in the end.

While you,re there. Don't suppose you know the best place to get a couple of m5x16 allen head bolts? It's to replace the anodised ones that i had to drill out.

Get stainless ones off ebay, I recommend a seller called 'boltmeup'

HMMMM.

(didn't tighten it enough the first time as I didn't want to break it! ) I must say, purchase a torque wrench. You can never go wrong by following manufacturer's spec, with the possible exception of filling the crankcase with 237 quarts of 15w-50!:thumbup

I have a torque wrench, didn't have the allen head sockets though. Now got them, but still get a bit nervous about tightening things that have fluid behind them. It's the main reason I don't like plumbing too, I'll give most other DIY jobs a go but try and avoid anything water related!!!
