I find my bike quite lerchy and lumpy when in low revs trotting through towns so is this normal for the mille and is there a mod to cure this :confused I havent changed the gearing yet but i dont think that will do it anyway :confused Still waiting for the jet upgrade for the gear selection too but surely that wont smoothe out the slow speed lurching :confused

Steve, the lurching or chugging you are experiencing in town i suspect is down to the standard 17/42 gearing. Drop to a 16 tooth front and it will be much less noticeable. Then go to 44 rear and you'll be thinking why you've not done this mod sooner :thumbup

The gearing will help a lot mate, but don't let the revs drop too low as you are causing the transmission to snatch, and that is not good for it.

Thanks fella's :thumbup.. now ill be in the dog house another week for getting some sprockets from ebay :devious

Cheers :thumbup

Steve bear in mind you may need a new 110 link 525 pitch chain if you go 16/44. It all depends what condition your existing chain is in and how much it's stretched as to whether the 44 tooth rear will fit.

Try going 16 front first and see how you get on. Renthal, Talon, Afam 16 fronts are around £20.

or ebay

Also, note the correct way round the sprocket goes when fitting.

Ive not had to adjust the chain since ive had it and it looks decent enough legs :thumbup Heard Talon sprockets are the best :dunno If need be ill buy the whole kit... ill need new sprockets and chain sooner or later anyway so mite as well have the best that are going to last :thumbup

Ps.. loads of adjustment left .

Don't tell me missus steve but ordered me gold X-ring chain and Stealth rear sprocket today - thats what happens when you listen to this lot on here - BAD INFLUENCE

I changed my sprocket to a 16 tooth this weekend and oh my god what a difference it made it was soooooooo worth 22 quid!

Hey guys, just followed the ebay link and from there to the sellers 'proper' web site, you can get the chain £10.00 cheaper via the proper site rather than ebay!! £95.00 including postage whereas it's £99.99 on ebay with £5.00 postage! Here's the LINK

Out of interest, is there any problems with the chain catching the chain guard when you up the rear sprocket size that much?

Dave, not sure if you are aware but the newer 03.5> 2008 RSVR and Factory run 16/40 gearing with 106 link chain, whereas the older RSV Mille and Mille R run 17/42 gearing with a 108 link chain as standard .

On the newer model bike you can change to 15/42 i.e one tooth down on the front and 2 up on the rear without having to replace the chain whereas on the older model, to run 16/44 gearing you'll almost certainly need to replace the chain with a 110 link.

There are no problems with the chain catching the chain guard on either bike

Appologies if this is stating the obvious

Does anyone else think it’s odd that Aprilia spent millions developing the RSV. Wind tunnel testing, prototyping, thousands of hours fine tuning the mapping, honing the handling, etc, ect. Won their first two world super bike races straight out of the box and they get the gearing completely wrong? I don’t think so.

Cheers.

H..

Mmm you got a point :roll but by the feedback changing the sprockets is a good idea :thumbup

No apologies needed mate, get lost in all the numbers and having it laid out in one answer is useful :thumbup

H.. you do have a point and I don't have any problems with mine as it is. The only thing I'd say is that everything is a compromise and the marketing boys would want to be able to quote a top speed higher than competitors. As we can't use the top speed on the road the gearing mod smooths out the lower speeds (it appears) and gives more acceleration which on the road is of more use.. wadda you think ???

H, you are absolutely correct but as Dave says everything is a compromise. Certainly with the older model RSV Mille, the Amercian model came with 16/42 gearing as standard. The UK model came with 17/42 gearing and i believe this was due to certain type approval regulations at the the time for noise and emissions. The R version was also supplied with an additional 16 tooth front sprocket from new so this would suggest the optimum gearing would in fact be 16/42. Someone may be able to spread more light on this subject but in my experience certainly by droppping one tooth on the front makes the bike much more useable and rideable. At the end of the day though it's all down to personal preference and how we ride the bike.
