Loose Steering Damper

Hi All,

Greetings. This is my first post on the Zone so take it easy on me!

My '99 RSV's steering damper seems to have a fair amount of play in it, as in I can move the bar up and down about half an inch. It's bolted down as tight as I dare, and the barings seem ok. But I can't seem to get the unit fitted tightly. It's the OEM red damper btw.

Any ideas anyone?

Cheers.

Its normal, needs to have a bit of play in it so the piston can always move in and out parallel, otherwise it'd bind up.
At least thats what I understand, someone on here should be able to confirm. Lots of knowledge on here, given me loads of help.

p.s. are those your guitars in your avatar, can you recommend someone who makes a good quality, yet cheap, nylon string classical guitar.

cheers.

yeah its right what skrall says - there has to be vertical play in the mountings - mine is the same on the 07 factory - can tilt it upwards - no probs -

Hey Woolly,

Are you some kind of popeye with a built in gyro?
I've had a few spills and broken both wrists, so at certain times the steering damper definately saves my backon! Haven't had a tank slapping experience since my old ZX6R (un-dampered btw...)

Anyone else second dumping the damper?
Thanks for the feedback all.

only had one real good tankslapper caused by cats eyes at 140mph.

normally if it starts to shake it head it will stop by either going faster or slowing down.

after having a proper slapper, i dont think a damper will stop it.

do you want to know what stopped mine?
it was a good `un, couldnt let go, couldnt get off the throttle, couldnt pull the brake. like being electricuted.
i had to make a decision, and that was to get off the bike before i had a head on crash at 140.
once i made that decision, i got up ready to jump off the back, thats when it stopped.
i think it was the bike slowing down cos i had sat up straight.

i hate cats eyes :pirate

you may have come across a particular roundabout that induces a shake, but have you ridden the same roundabout with / without the damper?
what is your conclusion my learned friend?

well woolly i would say your not riding your bike hard enough - i still have my blade and never had a damper rode it two's up in isle of man 140 mph + the rsv is a different animal and ridden hard enough needs one -especially the factory versions with lighterwheels ( less unsprung weight ) but yes get a slapper and ride on hard out of it - or get one and ride it hard :) ooopppss wheres the missus :)
