lights on

Why are bikes fitted with the headlights on as soon as ignition on? doesn't this put extra strain on the battery when starting?

My 1991 ZX7R has lights on all the time except for when you turn the key and crank the engine, as soon as it fires up they come.....

Was a good safety feature but as all new cars will soon have this its rather diminished.

im sure i heard it had something to do with european regulations, its becoming common now on all newer vehicles cars and bikes, personally i would rather have the option of turning them off as it just drains the battery and blinds other road users in the middle of the day

Wolf is correct. EU regulations mean every bike made from 2003 has to have it's lights on all the time, hence no light switch. Haven't got a problem with that but the bike manufacturers should wire things up that the lights only switch on once the engine is actually running.
